Distinct periods
Silent Period
(1895-1929)
Silent films were one of the earliest films and they told stories without
words which appealed to illiterate people. The silent period was a very
important period because it was the start of films and it really took off
and became a popular form of entertainment that evolved to the
movies today.
The Golden Age of Disney Animation
(1950-1967)
This age was the age that created classics like Cinderella, Alice in
Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101
Dalmatians, The sword in the Stone, and The Jungle Book. The golden
age of Disney animation is important because not only did it create
many classic animations, it also helped Disney out of bankruptcy and
made lots of success with the animation success which continued the
animation industry.
Golden Age of Hollywood
(1920-1960)
The golden age began at the end of the silent era and ended in the
early 1960s. The golden age started when The Jazz Singer was released
in 1927 and increased box-office profits for films as sound was
introduced to feature films. The golden age of Hollywood is important
because just like the golden age of Disney Animation, it is the reason
that movies became a popular form of entertainment and did really
well.
Key Individuals
Walt Disney
Walter Elias "Walt" Disney was born on December 5, 1901, the
founder of Disney, and is at the pinnacle of animation. Walt Disney has
developed many characters such as Donald Duck, Goofy, Mickey Mouse
and more. He has a big influence on how animation is made today,
from the character's development, the sound of the animation, how
lively they were, and many more ways. Being the first to make a full
featured film that was fully animated.
Chuck Jones
Charles Martin "Chuck" Jones was born on September 21, 1912 is
famous for creating the characters such as Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny,
Pepe Le Pew, and many more. Starting off his animation career with Ub
Iwerks to working at Warner Bros and MGM Studios. He influenced
how animation was made by his incredible skill with timing in the
animation making it more lively.
Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg born on December 18, 1946, is one of the most
famous and wealthiest directors in the filming industry. Mostly known
for his work on E.T, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan
and many other movies. A technique he uses in his film are the "dolly
zoom" to give more of an impact on a scene. In most of his movies, he
usually has the main character be a normal person, but finds
something irregular, he also has lots of references to world war 2.
Christopher Nolan
Christopher Jonathan James Nolan was born in July 30, 1970,
famous for Directing Inception, The Dark Knight, Interstellar and a few
more movies. Some famous techniques that he has made/used in his
movies are hard cuts for his transitions and ending, this allows the
movie to be more fast paced and efficient, usually cutting off right after
a characters line is done, and immediately going to black at the end of
a movie.
Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Joseph Hitchcock born on August 13, 1899, famous for
suspense in his movies, he has gained the title of the "Master of
Suspense", the suspense can be seen in his famous movies such as,
Vertigo and Psycho and many others. Techniques he has used in his
movies are point-of-view shots, and usually shoots in his studio.
Hitchcock also likes to use the feeling of being lost in his movies to
create a bigger impact of suspense. He also likes to have close up shots
of a girls hair. He had a few cameos in the beginning of his films.
Major Advancements in Technology/Eras
Major Advancements of the Camera Throughout the Years
13th-14th Century Camera Obscura: The camera obscura was
believed to be invented around the 13th-14th century. Using a box with
a tiny hole on the side and optical illusions with light, an image is
produced. The camera obscura was used to paint people onto a canvas
and later used to begin the history of cameras.
1837 Daguerreotypes: Louis Daguerre invented the first practical
photographic process, named the daguerreotypes and was unvieled in
1839. Iodine vapor was used on a silver-plated sheet of copper, giving it
a light-sensitive silver iodine. The image is proccessed by mercury
vapor and sodium chloride after exposure in the camera.
1888 "Kodak": The birth of film began with Kodak, created by
Greorge Eastman and was for sale in 1888. The Kodak was a camera
inside a box with "fixed-focus lens" and a "single shutter speed" and
was put for a low price. The cameras had a film inside of them and was
needed to be returned to purchase a new film. The interest for movies
became more popular and the camera was developed to be used as a
tool instead of a toy.
1948 INSTANT CAMERAS: Instant cameras were first announced in
1948, with the Polaroid model 95. The Model 95 used a chemical
process to produce the final prints from the negatives in under a
minute. The Polaroiad model 95 was nicknamed the Land Camera and
was put for a high price during the time. Other models and versions
were made of the Land Camera.
1980 Digital Cameras- Tehchnology at this time began to advance
and the early stages of eletric cameras began. Electric cameras
upgraded from the polaroid, savings images into an SD card and using
battery to keep the camera alive. Digital cameras have been used still
until now, even having really high qaulity cameras on cell phones.
