Biography

  • The deathcore band Chelsea Grin formed in Salt Lake City, Utah, US in 2007 and has been cranking out some of the heaviest, grittiest albums in their genre.

Lead vocalist Alex Koehler was formerly in a band called Ahazih, but once the band went through some lineup changes the members of the band started to call themselves Chelsea Grin. The band consists of six members, which allows them to accomplish musically intricate compositions. The band has three guitarists, permitting them to create a heavy rhythmic sound while the lead guitarist plays complicated riffs.

Not long after the band’s formation they released their self-titled EP in 2008, which was released on Statik Factory Records. The band would later sign to Artery Recordings and release their debut album “Desolation of Eden” in 2010. Their debut album was produced by Tim Lambesis from the band As I Lay Dying and did well on the charts reaching the No. 21 spot on the Top Heatseekers chart. The success of their album allowed the band to pursue a full US tour as well as garnered them praise in the “Alternative Press”.

In 2011 the band released their second studio album “My Damnation”, which showed Chelsea Grin stretching their creative abilities. The album focuses on lyrical themes pertaining to the afterlife and musically it featured more intricate guitar riffs and solos. The album also did well on the charts reaching the No. 6 spot on the US Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart.

The band released their third studio album “Ashes to Ashes” in 2014, which contained the singles “Letters”, “Angels Shall Sin, Demons Shall Pray”, and “Playing with Fire”. The album also did well on the charts reaching No. 27 on the US Billboard 200. Although the band mainly records original material, they released a cover of the song “Right Now” by Korn.

Chelsea Grin has taken influence from many bands such as Deftones, Slayer, Atreyu and Megadeth. Their songs cover a variety of metal sounds ranging from doom metal to symphonic metal, but whatever they end up producing is sure to be heavy. The band is constantly touring and have played many sold out concerts while touring with bands such as Emure, Born of Osiris, Parkway Drive, and Every Time I Die. They have also been known to play festivals such as Vans Warped Tour.

Live reviews

  • Chelsea Grin

Currently on a massive tour of the USA, Chelsea Grin are smashing every venue along the country, from impericon festival to their own gigs, armed with killer lyrics, raucous solos and unending energy. The Band dominate every stage they are on, with their aggressive vocals, powerful death-core style and intense stage presence. Lead by screamo master Alex Koehler, the lads from Salt Lake City are metal head favourites at festivals, always surrounded by a moshpit and a crowd of devoted fans. The gigs can get rough and are not for the faint hearted, but if you love to mosh their raw, intense tunes are ideal for a headbang. Gigs result in circles of death, crowd surfing and some pretty violent moshing - so be prepared to jump, thrash and hold your ground. The band like to get up close and personal with the crowds making for an intense experience, sure to cause some good old sweaty chaos - perfect for the more experienced gig lover. The crowd goes mental from the opening song and the party keeps going right until the final moments. The band are a classic example of the mighty death-core genre, their gigs are sure to leave you breathless, sweaty and wanting more.

  • Utah death-core band Chelsea Grin have quite a universal appeal when it comes to their music as their fanbase is made up of a range of ages and seems equally popular with both sexes. Known for really throwing themselves into the live performance, the group's current lineup is perhaps its strongest so far despite having gone through numerous changes in a relatively short amount of time.

Consistent member and vocalist Alex Koehler ties the whole operation together and also really knows how to bring together the discography into a great setlist. The audience jumps from the very beginning along with the raucous guitar riffs and thumping drums as well as the shout-along chorus of 'The Foolish One'. Koehler knows how to bait the crowds and causes a huge surge towards the stage as he commands the instrumental introductions of 'My Damnation'. With a sturdy lineup and more global acclaim, Chelsea Grin seem to be going from strength to strength as of late and their live show is simply an extension of this togetherness.

  • Chelsea Grin didn’t show up. Ice Nine Kills put on a fantastic show. They had an incredible amount of energy and stage presence. Everytime I Die had 30 something blinding white lights shining behind them into the crowd that periodically flashed for every song to the point where I faced away from the stage for most of their set. They seemed disorganized like each member was doing their own thing. The lead guitarist paced in circles while others jumped around out of sync.

Motionless in White put on a feast for the eyes with a fully decorated stage, dancers, effects, and costumes. They sound okay too.

  • Amazing!! Chelsea Grin killed it and Alex, damn that dude has some swagger. Just a great night all in all. Alex is a great front man and the entire band stuck around to meet fans after the show, which was awesome. Hats off to these guys for playing a killer show and being so humble. Sucks that Lorna Shore didn't make it to the show, and I thought it was strange nobody even acknowledged it. Opening acts Wage War and Ocean's Ate Alaska were both great live. Hard Luck Bar could use some better air circulation...cause damn that venue was HOT and it wasn't just Chelsea Grin that made it so haha!

  • Chelsea Grin are just who I thought they were, not like in the movies where backstage is just a pot house. They were laid back, cool guys and defiantly funny! The concert on the second hand was amazing, and being in the mosh for the first time, it was brutal and intense! And you are expected to be smacked in the face or a foot up the ass. But it is defiantly the day I would want to relive again! I will be at the next one next time they are in Melbourne. It was honestly the best concert experience I've had!

  • The concert was awesome! Moshpits, circlepits, walls of death, crowdsurfers, you name it! New lead singer, Tom, is really nice and will fistbump you if you are in the front row of the stage. A few fans even got on stage to sing along with Tom in the mic. Great show, great band. My favorite band in fact! I will definitely try to see them again next time they come to my home town, Montreal.

  • One of the craziest crowd experience. Mosh pits that slams all the way to the front of the stage, jumping off stages, and if you didn’t get VIP you could still get the chance to interact with the band in GA or if not, give them a knuckle punch Hell Yeah! And for the price and the amount of music and bands in that show, all worth the experience.
