Biography

  • American indie-folk band, The Mowgli's, hail from California, US via the Midwest, making music since 2009 that melds rock 'n' roll with folk-tinged electronica, similar to the likes of Grouplove, Fun and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

The band formed after five childhood friends, Matthew Di Panni (bass guitar/vocals), Dave Appelbaum (keybords/vocals), Spencer Trent (percussion/guitar/melodica/vocals), Michael Vincze (guitars/vocals) and Andy Warren (drums/percussion/vocals) met Colin Dieden (vocals/guitar/percussion) and Josh Hogan (guitar/vocals), two residents of midwest USA met in 2009. After an impromptu trip to a motel in San Francisco, Vincze and Dieden had written the band's first single and from there the project built momentum.

Their first record was released in 2010, as a free download on bandcamp. The band began playing as many gigs as possible, honing their craft, performing some days at as many as 5 gigs spread across the day and night, a various venues, such as cafes, offices, clothing stores and farmer's markets.

Their debut album, 2012's independently released "Sound the Drum" brought the Mowgli's music to a wider audience, gaining the attention of A & R agents, which led to the band signing with Photo Finish Records, a label in partnership with Island and DefJam. The lead single "San Francisco has slowly built in its success, doing well in the radio charts and becoming Itunes single of the week, with the band performing the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Their major label debut was released in June, 2013, titled "Waiting for the Dawn" which was received with critical acclaim.

The band are committed activists, forming a collective called Be a Mowgli, who encourage people to participate in random acts of kindness. They have also performed at benefit concerts, such as for the Occupy movement.

Live reviews

  • The Mowgli's

American alt-rockers The Mowglis are one of the most harmonious rock groups around due to the large amount of members all of which incorporate vocals to the operation. Since they self released their debut in 2012, they have achieved huge success on the live circuit and have earned a loyal following for the no nonsense approach to the live show.

There is no facade or trickery during the performance, they put their music at the centre of stage and fans watch on in quiet awe. The sounds are varied and the vocals once again shine on hymnal opener 'Emily' where the whole band become something of a supporting choir onstage as every member adds to the melody at some point. Showcasing new material from 'Kids In Love', the audience are receptive throughout and sing, cheer and applaud in all the right places.

The group looks comfortable onstage and Katie Earl thanks the vocal crowd for the support before the band begin the introduction to 'San Francisco' to collective cheers. A band who are very much on the rise at a startling pace.

  • The energy of the show - all three acts - was great.

Unfortunately, for the Mowgli's the sound on the left (bar) side of the room wasn't as well mixed as the sound closer to the door. The sound mix was OK for Coral Belles which was at lower volume.

While The Casbah may think that the poor maintenance of their facility is edgy, it is simply trashy. Spend a few dollars to replace the fixtures in the restrooms, remove the tagging from the walls, actually clean the floors, etc. In addition, the striping they have on the steps up from the floor are actually reversed from what they should be and we saw one woman fall during the event due to this (not alcohol).

This was my first visit to The Casbah, and probably my last because it is clear that The Casbah management doesn't want to provide a clean and safe environment for their audience. The grunge look of the club might have worked a few decades ago, but I'm paying good money to listen to good bands in a good-enough environment.

  • The Mowgli's put on the greatest show ever! They were so full of energy! The band works together to create an amazing and unified energy that explodes in the room and injects into every person in the room including the sound crew. Even if you've never seen nor heard of them, they are so interactive with the crowd and their simple but catchy hooks make it easy and fun to sing along to. Their sound is so familiar and thus welcoming. You can't help but to tap your foot or even dance to the punchy beat of their music. Definitely one of the greatest concerts of the year and of my life. I highly recommend seeing them and will definitely be attending their next show. What a great way to bring in the holiday, and new year. Thank you, Mowgli's!

This is a group of friends, talented, fun and free, making their own brand of music and taking us along for the ride. It is a show that starts off high and ends higher. They have an agenda, and it is to assure you fall in love, you live life and you give selflessly. Yep, it's all there in this huge party, crazy dancing and just plain amazing.

I love this band, love how they connect and make you part of a great show. Go see them, buy their music and get some love to spread around!!

  • I have been following these merry pranksters for over a year now and every single time I see them I am blown away. Their ability to liven up a crowd is nothing short of admirable. Their shows promote love, unity, and freedom. And their mission to spread love can be seen through their smiles and the lyrics in their songs. All 7 of them contribute to the greatness. You can see the unity they have within the band by the way they perform on stage. It's like they are having a party with themselves and had all of us over. There is really not much I can say other than to keep repeating "they are amazing. They are wonderful. They are perfect."

  • They are just friendly down to earth people , that are just everyday normal people spreading love ! This makes the concert not only a hundred times better, but it makes them a better band. This concert was the best concert I've ever been to because they interacted with the crowd, and afterward talked to their fans and allowed pictures with them. Thank you for making me feel like a better person the Mowgli's! I will forever keep living by your motto, that spreading love can change the world!

  • This was a great show. Didn't expect it not to be because I love The Mowgli's. They were energetic and brought a great playlist. Their Indie Pop is second to none. The venue was small so seeing them up close was really cool. Katie Earl was amazing...but is that really a surprise?! :)

I also found Beach Weather extremely enjoyable as well as the main act, The Maine. Never really listened to either band before but have since been listening to them on Spotify. Good stuff.

  • This was the first time at this venue and I would have to say it was a small and great way to see any band that comes to town. I would suggest this venue to anyone and the atmosphere and the sound was great. All the bands that played were excellent (Hippo Campus, Night Riots and Mowgli's). Will definitely see all these bands again the next time they are in the area.

  • The show with Twin XL and Jukebox the Ghost was a night I will never forget. The band was so personable and interacted with the crowd. They played every song my friends and I wanted to hear. After the show, they came up to us to take pictures and talk to us. They felt like they were our friends. Last night made me forever fan.
