Biography

  • Kodaline are an Irish rock band, originating from Dublin, Ireland. Their music style is often cited as belonging to the indie genre.

The band is made up of childhood friends Steve Garrigan, on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Mark Prendergast, on lead guitar, backing vocals and keyboards. The other two members consist of Vinny May on drums, percussion and backing vocals and Jason Boland, who plays bass guitar and also provides backing vocals. Garrigan and Prendergast grew up in Swords, Dublin together. They attended the same school and took part in many ‘battle of the bands’ together, indicating an early love for music that would later shape their careers.

Formed in 2005 under the name 21 Demands, the band changed their name in 2011 to Kodaline and soon after started to gain in popularity and fame as their star grew brighter and brighter. They transformed from an unsigned, unknown band to one of the most popular indie bands today, eventually signing with RCA records. Their debut EP, self- entitled, was released on 7 September 2012 and their first studio album, ‘In a Perfect World’, was released on 17 June 2013. Both albums received great critical acclaim and resulted in enormous success for the band in the indie scene. From their debut EP, the single ‘All I Want’ was selected as BBC Radio 1s record of the week, allowing the relatively unknown band some great exposure. It also featured in Grey’s Anatomy, garnering the band even more exposure. Their second album contained recurring singles from the first as well as many new tracks such as ‘One Day’, ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘After the Fall’.

Their songs have been used extensively on television, as background tracks to The Vampire Diaries and The Fault in Our Stars, to name but a few. Potentially the most popular track the band has produced to date is their hit single ‘High Hopes’.

Live reviews

  • First of all, I'd like to thank songkick for letting me know about Kodaline coming to Lyon.

I've discovered this amazing band last year through a friend and I've been a die hard fan of theirs since then.

Never had I thought that they'd come to a concert 10 minutes away from where I live !!

I've had the ticket nice and ready 5 months prior to the show and I can say that it was completely worth the wait.

The concert opened up with a performance from an Irish band called "All Tvvins" who are quite good btw, people should totally check them out !

After 5 or 6 songs from the opening band and some 20 minutes of (unbearable !) waiting, the moment we've all been waiting for finally came and Kodaline entered the stage, opening beautifully with the song "Ready" from their second album.

The track list was a mix of songs from both their albums although the second one was a bit more promoted.

Having listened to their songs an endless amount of times, I was pleasantly surprised by how much their live performance is truthful to the studio version and even better might I say because you get to experience the songs with them.

I've never felt so alive in my entire life, their music is so uplifting with lyrics so beautifully written that you live each song with them and not just listen to the beat.

It was a monumental night for me.

Kodaline is one of those bands that restores your faith in music, it shows you that there's still quality music being made out there and that genius still exists.

The only critique I have about the concert is that it was too short for my taste. But then again, nothing lasts forever, especially beautiful things, they tend to be so ephemeral.

Music is one of the most beautiful and precious things about this life, it is what keeps me going every day, getting to experience it live (for the first time !) brought my love for it to an even higher level I didn't even know existed.

Thank you Kodaline for this magical night and I wish with all my heart to see you again soon.

(I remember waking up the next day thinking that it was all just a dream until I saw the videos I've recorded on my phone !)

  • It continues to amaze me as to how four young men from Dublin can bring so much happiness to my life and leave me with amazing memories I will never forget. Mark, Steve, Vinny and Jason are the four members of Kodaline, and the four people who I really look up to. I have been a Kodaline fan for many years now and can proudly say I have had the opportunity of seeing this band live twice. Given the fact the fact I am also Irish, I feel I can really connect with Kodaline and their Amazing songs. Their music can have me dancing one minute, and filling with tears the next. When I saw Kodaline for the first time in Killarney I was truly blown away. They began their set with "After the fall," which was the perfect start in my opinion. It was an upbeat song and so it got the crowd going. From there on in they had a brilliant set list. One of my favourites was "Love Like This," as Steve played the harmonica and they really got the crowd involved. Throughout the whole night they kept interacting with the audience and were genuinely thankful for the support which was lovely to see. "All I want," was preformed perfectly on the night as the crowd went quiet in awe and anticipation and it’s safe to say that no one was disappointed. The night over all was absolutely amazing and I can honestly say it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to. Seeing as I was so impressed with this gig, I have gone back to see them since then, and I also have tickets to see them next month. I am very excited about this concert as I know that Kodaline will put on a brilliant show as per usual. I would highly recommend that any fans of Kodaine should definitely go to see them in concert as you will not be disappointed.

  • The whole evening was a blast!

First of all, they had Andreas Moe as supporting act - which was a positive surprise and surely a Good choice.

But most of all, the crowd, the venue and - above all - the Performance was simply amazing! The atmosphere was awesome throughout the whole gig! They played all the famous Songs, even gave a splendid reprise, including a breathtaking Performance of "All I Want" (which was the one song I secretly hoped most of all they'd Play --- I was overwhelmed when they eventually did). The lads simply did a magnificent job (as anticipated), threw in some gags and laughters, and alltogether were in a great mood, even joking and obviously enjoying the show themselves. Jason did some funny moves for the cameras and Steve surely knows how to motivate the audience. There was a lot of - more or less melodic - singing along involved, and especially the small and rather limited space the venue had to offer made it a more special and private experience than a huge event could have offered. Over all it was a great gig! I'd recommend to attend any concert possible without hesitation. Even the friend I dragged along (who didn't even know about the band before) is now a dedicated fan... Cheers, guys! It was a night worth remembering!

  • Irish rock bands are just a great type of band to see live. Maybe that's my bias as someone who identifies one hundred and ten percent as Irish and lives in Boston, but I must say that Irish rock bands always provide a show like no other. One of my favorite Irish rock bands has got to be Kodaline, and they definitely don't disappoint when it comes to putting on a heck of a show.

Stephen, Vinny, Jason, and Mark just know how to make music, and their song "Give Me A Minute" certainly proves that. I got to see Kodaline on a recent trip to the Reading Festival in August, and their set was amazing. Their lyrics are really quite good, and make sure that there's more to their music than just the music itself, but their stage presence alone makes them an inspiration in my book. Kodaline's performances of "All Comes Down To You" and "Brand New Day" were definite favorites of mine, and really got the crowd going, too. Speaking of the crowd, this crowd was stellar and really added a lot to the performance. Everyone there at the Reading Festival was so down with Kodaline rocking out and it just made it such a great environment to appreciate such great rock music.

  • Steve Garrigan, Vinny May, Jason Boland and Mark Prendergast, better known as Kodaline took 2014 by storm riding the success of their debut album 'In a Perfect World'. Stopping off at T in the Park during a lengthy world tour, the band did not disappoint the Scottish revellers as they confidently took to the stage to showcase the music that propelled them into the limelight.

Beginning with the opening strings of 'After The Fall', the boys looked so happy to be onstage performing as they encouraged the crowd to clap along. Stopping only briefly to introduce themselves as Kodaline to which the reply was a huge cheer, they began 'One Day' and the crowd began to sing in unison. This sense of unity was ever-present throughout the gig and it was a real impressive feat to make a festival field feel like an intimate venue.

The anthemic 'High Hopes' received the largest cheer, but from the opening track the band had completely won over their crowd with the irish charm and each song was applauded and sung with equal enthusiasm.

  • We'd seen Kodaline play Webster Hall, NYC last February.

This time was The Albert Hall, Manchester, England.

Two great (similar) venues... I'm not really a Kodaline fan - my girlfriend is. She loves them and was so excited to go see them again.

The band sounded good and were very tight - I guess this is due to (a) musical talent (b) constant touring - these guys never stop.

I didn't know any of their songs but they were a pretty good live band. Yes, I'd go again... maybe I need to listen to some of their albums first?

  • Opening band (Ocean Park Standoff) had a lot of energy. Wish I had known about them. Unfortunately, the crowd did not match their energy level. They were pretty good!

Kodaline: Do you follow your fire? If you do, you should have already ended up seeing this band play live. Talented bunch of lads put on an awesome show. The crowd was great. There were entire sections (larger than I'm used to experiencing) of songs where the band stopped playing and just let us sing it for them.

  • Kodaline was better than expected! They had the whole place singing & Steve, the lead singer had awesome vocals that would silence out the whole crowd. Vincent, the drummer was also beyond amazing. Mark was switching his guitars from acoustic to electric on and off was fun to watch and Jason was amazing with the bass! Loved every minute spent seeing them live. Great stage presence. They will rock your socks off.

  • 90 minutes we were Standing in the crowd and waiting for one of our favourit bands. And then it began: The superb Kodaline Conzert. It was just amazing! The whole concert through there was this Feeling. It's not just the Music. Even the lyrics are perfect. You can relate to it. It was a pity that they didn't Play their song "Talk" the whole way through. But I highly recommend this band. They are even live great!

  • Great seeing them live! The music was very nice, and it was a comfortable and small venue. Lead singer Steve Garrigan didn't seem as engaged as I wish he would have been, but it sounded like he was a little bit ill, so maybe it just wasn't his day. I'm grateful he performed for us anyway, and the rest of the band was absolutely lovely. Thanks so much. Honourary shoutout to the warm-up band LA.
