Biography

  • Hailing from Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA, After The Burial are a heavy metal band that formed in 2004. The quintet are one of the most influential progressive metal acts in the world, being one of the key bands associated with the rising “Djent” scene.

It’s not just the pop world in which the artists involved are getting younger and younger. Casually flick through an issue of Kerrang! these days and you’re sure to find a band whose members are too young to get into their own shows. It’ll be a very long time before they can do things that seemingly define heavy metallers like drinking and staying out until first light either. The truly terrifying thing is that these artists aren’t just tiny, they’re also better musicians than most could ever hope to be, who’ve spent their childhood and early adolescence burning through Metallica and Pantera tab books when most were playing Crash Bandicoot.

After The Burial is a pretty crystal clear look at what’s probably going to happen when those bands grow up. This is because they too are a band whose members, Nick Wellner, Trent Hafdahl, Justin Lowe, Greg Erickson and Dave Coleman, met and formed in high school and got to be pretty mind-blowing players before they’d even graduated. If the modern wave of young bands ends up anything like them, then they’re going to innovate, inspire and rock like absolute bastards. It’s not like the band began as anyone’s wannabe’s either, they began touring immediately after high school and by late 2005, they’d recorded their debut E.P “Forging A Future Self”, who title says it all.

From the very beginning this was going to be a band that did things by their own rules and created their own sound, and this continued even after line-up troubles resulted in the departure of Erickson and Wellner. Undeterred, the band signed to Sumerian Records for the release of their first full-length album “Rareform” and since then, they’ve toured and sold out shows all over the world, and released a further two albums. The band are living proof that no matter how “uncommercial” or “inaccessible” music can be, talent wins out in the end. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

  • After the Burial

Although Minnesota metalcore band After the Burial only formed in 2004, they are already considered one of the most influential bands on the genres of progressive metal and hardcore. To achieve this level of legacy in such a short space of time you need to release solid albums and have a live show that matches this high level of quality.

Although the band is now marred with the tragedy of their founding guitarist's Justin Lowe's tragic death, they continue on as a quartet playing in their synonymously chaotic manner. The fact they are now appearing regularly on the charts means the venues and audiences are increasing dramatically in size which does detract some of the chaotic intimacy yet they still make the show seem as high octane as ever. Anthony Notarmaso is a great frontman and has the whole room in the palm of his band as he commands mass moshing, chant-alongs and audience participation throughout. They could make the ground shake by the finale of 'A Steady Decline' as each member takes to the front of the stage and tears apart their instrument soundtracked by the roars of the baying crowd.

  • After the Burial puts on an absolutely amazing show. I've seen these guys three times and I will continue to see them every chance I get for the rest of my life.

The passion and energy with which they perform is top notch. From the first riff until the last it's max energy and effort.

I took three buddies to see them and only one of them was familiar with them. Needless to say all three of them were blown away and have been raving non stop about their performance.

They sound incredibly clean live. The drums, the guitar and the vocals are all spot on. I've been to a ton of metal shows and these guys are on my "Can't miss list." I've had them stuck in my head since I left the show last night and that's not a bad thing. I will never miss an opportunity to see these guys live.

  • The show was amazing! After the Burial's set was by far the high point of the night, which begs the question, why aren't they headlining this tour? Veil of Maya is a good band, and I have a lot of respect for them, but I feel genuinely sorry for them having to follow After the Burial every night.

I can only hope that they will start playing in California more frequently after this tour.

  • Their set list was only 6 songs but they were all excellent songs. 2 from new album and 2 from Dig Deep and 2 older ones. Sounded flawless. More words more words more words.
