Top ten lessons from FWD Champions Day 2024:

Romantic Warrior starred again
Romantic Warrior lands a third QEII Cup win

1: Ascot’s Champs Day isn’t the only one that can be heavily impacted by rain, especially if a relentless deluge delivers more than eight inches in the preceding week.

2: GOLDEN SIXTY’s blistering speed was nullified by Sha Tin’s dead track and now seems the right time to say farewell to the horse who has done more to promote HK racing than any other.

3: ZAC PURTON showed how big a difference elite riders can make with a front-running ride of rare finesse aboard BEAUTY ETERNAL.

4: HUGHIE BOWMAN was equally clinical in stalking and pouncing on the ultra-progressive INVINCIBLE SAGE.

5: It shouldn’t be forgotten that LUCKY SWEYNESSE gave the Sage 5lb and a handy beating recently and the champion sprinter was a notable ghost at the Chairman’s Sprint feast this year.

6: Three-time QEII hero ROMANTIC WARRIOR is made of nails and has now won four G1s this season, including that historic Cox Plate success, by a combined distance of just one length.

7: His rider JAMES McDONALD will add immense quality and character to the HK scene if he decides to make the move full time.

8: YUGA KAWADA has left a lot of money on the bar recently, first by setting star Japanese filly Liberty Island a huge task in Dubai then by making a wildly optimistic mid-race move on QEII runner-up PROGNOSIS.

9: Aussie horsemen need to start supporting HK’s major days if they want a bigger slice of the World Pool cake judged on some pointed comments from the CEO of the HKJC.

10: And the plucky Brits needs to start sending genuine G1 horses to HKIR and Champions Day if they want to avoid the sort of anti-climactic blowout that marked Sunday’s showpiece.

Bowman booking suggests Papa can be the daddy

McDonald headed back Down Under after Sunday’s showpiece but his fellow G1 winners will both be at Happy Valley on Wednesday and the booking of Bowman first time for KASA PAPA in the Chantilly Handicap at 2.10 is well worth noting.

Tony Cruz’s gelding has dropped from a mark 0f 76 to 51 after going winless in 18 HK starts but he’s been knocking on the door at the Valley of late, most recently when second in March.

Kasa Papa made a big move from the rear down the far side that night only to be run down close home. A smoother passage seems assured with the canny Bowman aboard and this might just be a case of right rider, right time.

Purton playing Simply the best

Zac Purton celebrates his 1,700th HK winner
Zac Purton

The booking of Purton for the first time almost worked a treat for SIMPLY MAVERICK at the Valley three weeks ago and Ricky Yiu’s gelding is worth another chance in the Deauville Handicap at 3.15.

Strong support sent Simply Maverick off at 2.6 that night and he ran a belter, forced wider than ideal then coming home strongly to go down b y a nose to Ivy League. A 3lb pull with the winner is handy and, with Purton aboard again, another bold bid looks assured.

The Class 3 dash that closes the card looks a warm affair but COLOURFUL EMPEROR and KAHOLO ANGEL look a handy duo against the field in the ParisLongchamp Handicap (3.50).

Colourful Emperor has been in great nick and still looks fairly treated after finishing clear of the rest behind a strong improver last time, while Kaholo Angel isn’t well drawn in gate 11 but still warrants a saver given the way he surged clear under 10lb claimer Ellis Wong here recently.

Wednesday’s Happy Valley Views

  • 2.10: Kasa Papa
  • 3.15: Simply Maverick
  • 3.50: Colourful Emperor/ Kaholo Angel
