Cole Sprouse Will Not Be Singing in the “Riverdale” Musical Episode

But basically everyone else (including Archie) will be.

It seems like not an episode of Riverdale passes without Archie, Josie (and her Pussycats), Cheryl, Veronica, or some combination thereof belting out some notes. So when the producers of the hit show announced last month that the show would be getting an entire musical episode, pretty much no one was surprised. One character, however, will be continuing his song-less streak. That's Jughead Jones, who producers have confirmed will not be showing off his pipes in Riverdale High's production of Carrie: The Musical on April 18.

According to TV Line, Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa broke the news at a recent press screening. Apparently, it all boils down to Cole Sprouse's interest (or lack thereof) in musicals. “Cole and I talked about it a while ago, and I said, ‘How do you feel about musicals?’" Roberto said. "At that time, we were going to do Little Shop of Horrors. And he basically said, ‘Listen, I never sang for Disney. It would take a lot.'" (Cole was, of course, referring to his time in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, but as Cosmo points out, there was a bit of musicality and rapping showcased.)

Cole apparently isn't into singing off-screen either. Roberto told TV Line that at Season 1's wrap party, almost the entire cast and crew were participating in a sort of variety show on a stage at the venue. "So literally every cast member sang but Cole," he said. "Every parent, every kid, every crew member sang . . . except for Cole. So it was like, 'Okay, got it.'"

At the same time, singing (and in a school musical, no less) doesn't really seem like a characteristically Jughead thing to do. "When we really thought about the character of Jughead, he felt like the one character who probably wouldn’t be in the school musical," Roberto continued. "When you see the episode, he’s very much an integral part of it, and he’s doing something quintessentially Jughead during the musical. Except he doesn’t sing.”

As we've previously reported, that "something" is filming a documentary about the behind-the-scenes production of the musical, so Jughead's non-singing doesn't really come as too much of a surprise. Still, if you were looking forward to Riverdale's mopiest teen doing jazz hands to some show tunes, we're sorry to disappoint.
