DJ Surkin Q&A

This article is more than 12 years old
The French electro whiz-kid and Marble co-founder empties the contents of his psychic record bag

Listen to Surkin's choices on Mixcloud

The track I'll be opening my next DJ set with
Boys Noize & Erol Alkan: Avalanche (Canblaster Remix)

Canblaster is the future! He started by making music for Japanese rhythm action games in high school and now he's one of the best producers in France.

The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
Daft Punk: Da Funk

I've played it so much that I usually only use it as a last resort but it never disappoints.

The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Surkin: Lose Yourself (Rustie Remix)

It's always strange when you hear a remix of one of your tracks for the first time but I loved this one instantly. We share a common love for digital synths and 90s influences but apply them in very different ways.

The track I wish I'd signed to my label
Randomer: Real Talk

A super-classy re-interpretation of Chicago ghetto house music, sounding rough but not retro. A perfect balance between old and new. I'm jealous!

The track that got me out of bed this morning
Busta Rhymes: Light Your Ass On Fire

The Neptunes are the producers who introduced me to electronic sounds. This could be released tomorrow and it would still sound impressively fresh and new.

The best track by my favourite new artist
Light Year: Moderation

They used to be a duo until they split a few months ago. Now it's only one person, and this is his first solo release. Very cool.

The ideal festival track
Gesaffelstein: Viol (Brodinski Remix)

The original is already huge but Brodinski takes it to the next level. It's definitely going to save my life more than once this summer.

The track I'd play at my auntie's wedding
Phil Collins: In The Air Tonight

Maybe a bit too sexual for my auntie's wedding, but I would definitely take the chance.

The track that should have been a crossover hit
Birdy Nam Nam ft Teki Latex: Cadillac Dreams

Birdy Nam Nam are huge in France but for some reason their music has never really taken off abroad. Cadillac Dreams sounds like a robotic Notorious BIG came back to life to make screwed-up music.

The track I'd play at sunset in Ibiza
Joe Smooth: Promised Land

I was only four when this was released but in 20 years nobody has managed to do anything more "sunsetty" than this track.

Surkin plays The Nest, N16, Friday
