Introduction

Richard Gormley
Automotive Writer and Photographer

Marketed by Ford as “the car you’ve always promised yourself”– the Capri was a sensation from day one!

Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969 the Capri was an instant hit - 19 million cars went on to sell during a 17-year production run. Beautifully designed by Philip T Clark, who had been involved in the development of the Mustang, the car was available with extensive options designed to appeal to a wide range of buyers.

Combining good looks, performance, and practicality the styling of the Capri had clear US influence with elements of the Mustang reflected in the front end and side profile. These cars look great from any angle – there’s no getting away from it, the Capri was and still is cool!

And this highly original, 1983 LS model, is the more practical MK III and it’s a stunner. In beautiful 'Cardinal Red' over classic, period, grey check interior - wait to you check out the images and videos as this car is in great shape. It’s only had two owners from new and has been meticulously maintained for the whole of its life. Everything works as it should and this lovely Ford comes with a new MOT - so it’s ready to use and enjoy.

We have taken plenty of high-resolution photos and videos of this highly original, classic Ford - but don't take our word for it, judge for yourself.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Richard after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We saw this car and just had to have it – it looks fantastic, it’s stylish, it's practical and above all it’s great fun to drive.

Paul has owned this car for seven years and has loved every minute of it.

Paul tells us, “My wife, Eloise, fell in love with this car first. Personally I’d always been a VW man, having owned a ’67 Beetle, but I absolutely love driving this car. It looks great, always turns heads, and holds its own perfectly in modern traffic. It was owned by an engineer previously and has been so well looked after that we really haven’t had to do much to it at all”.

Paul goes on to say, “We’ll be really sorry to see it go but we are not using it as much as we used to and it really does deserve to be enjoyed”.

Paul will be happy to answer any questions about his lovely Capri in the comments section below.

Exterior

Classic sculpted panels and elegant flowing lines in stunning Cardinal Red - both beautiful and iconic.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13-inch, four spoke, aftermarket alloy wheels really suit the car - they appear in excellent condition and we could see no sign of kerbing.

The wheels are wearing Champiro 185/60/R13 tyres all round which appear in great condition with good tread remaining.

Bodywork

This car looks great. It stands straight - bonnet, doors and tailgate all open and close with precision while shut lines appear good too. The manually operated sunroof works as it should in both tilt and slide settings.

Paul tells us the car has never been welded and overall, the condition of the bodywork is remarkable. There are, inevitably, one or two age related marks most notably on the front valance and bumper. There is a very minor ding just behind the offside headlights and some slight bubbling on the tailgate nearside. We really did have to look for these imperfections though.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Cardinal Red paint really enhances the lines of this car. The finish is even with a deep, consistent shine. There are very few age-related marks and although the car has had some panels professionally resprayed, this has been done to a very high standard and we're told that much of the body retains its original paint. Incredible for a 39-year-old car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows and mirrors are free from scratching and remain clear and undamaged. The classic MKIII twin headlights appear in great shape as do all the other lights and lenses and we could see no evidence of damage or clouding.

Interior

Step back into the early eighties – check cloth seats, period radio and deep-set dials give this cabin a fantastic period feel

Seats and Carpets

Grey, check cloth seats look in very good condition with only minor signs of wear to the driver’s seat bolster and cushion edges. While the front seats would benefit from a clean the rear seats appear virtually unused. The seat folding mechanism on the drivers’ side is not currently working and requires attention.

The door card surrounds, and cloth inserts look in equally good shape.

The matching grey carpets and branded floor mats present well with no significant rips or tears while the headlining and interior trim look good.

Dashboard

The moulded grey facia presents very well. The dials all appear clear, and switchgear all looks in good condition. There is a split in the top of the dash as can be seen from the images.

Paul advises that all dial, gauges, switches and buttons work exactly as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three spoke, moulded steering wheel looks good as does the ford centre badging. The gear leaver shows signs of use, but all look entirely in keeping with the age and mileage.

Take a look at the interior video and high-resolution images to appreciate this characterful, eighties interior.

Mechanics

The 1593cc, OHC, Ford “Pinto” engine has a well-deserved reputation for lively performance and dependability.

Engine and Gearbox

The four-cylinder OHC engine sits in a remarkably clean engine bay. With 74bhp available the 1.6LS delivers a factory specified, top speed of a whisker under 100mph and transfers power to the rear wheels through Fords famously light and precise, four speed, gearbox. The original carburettor on this car has been replaced with a Weber unit.

Check out the On The Road video to see how the car fires up easily and settles down to a steady idle.

Suspension and Brakes

This Capri is equipped with discs up front and drums on the rear. On our drive with Paul the car pulled up steadily and evenly. Suspension felt firm and compliant with no untoward knocks bangs or rattles.

The Drive

On our test drive with Paul the car started easily and pulled strongly. Acceleration was brisk while gear changes and steering seemed light and precise. The car felt planted and pulled up evenly without drifting to either side. On the whole a great drive with a surprisingly modern feel.

We were even accompanied by some eighties music on the period radio!

Check out the On the Road Video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

Electrics are very simple for cars of this era – we could see no faults and Paul confirmed everything works exactly as it should.

History and Paperwork

The Capri is iconic, stylish, and very cool – original ones like this are becoming increasingly investible too

80’s Fords in original condition, with this kind of history don’t come up very often.
