Earlier this week, I posted the pattern for crocheting the pieces for the Easy Crochet Backpack. Today, I will walk through the instructions for assembling those pieces into a cute bag! We will take it slowly and do this assembly in 15 steps. At the end, you will have a backpack in which you can carry yarn and a half-finished project, overnight clothes, or stuffed animals!
A few notes before we begin:
- The piece that is the back of the backpack, which also folds over to be the top and the flap onto the front? I will refer to this as the back of the backpack in this post. I called it the back/top flap in the crochet pattern.
- For sewing the big pieces of the bag together, I use a single crochet seam. It seemed sturdier than a slip stitch seam and I thought it would give the bag a little more structure at the seams. I explain the single crochet seam just before Step 1, but if you need a video showing how to do a single crochet seam, Tamara Kelly from Moogly has a great one here.
- When the instructions say to finish off securely, I mean make sure your ending stitch cannot come undone. Just like with sweater seams, I crocheted a few additional chain stitches before fastening off.
- Use a stitch marker or a small piece of a different color yarn to mark the row on the back piece where you’d like the top of the sides to hit. I did mine at row 50. You may have to move the marker after doing the seams attaching the bottom of the bag, but for now it’s good to have in mind where you would like the top of sides to connect. (And it’s a good idea to do this before you begin sewing into the piece.
- One of the things that becomes clear in my pictures is that I have a lot of “do as I say, not as I do” about weaving in ends. I have a lot of ends that have not been woven in at the point when the pictures were taken. I was too eager to begin assembling everything. Bad crocheter!
Single Crochet Seam
The single crochet seam is a really easy seam to make. You basically crochet a row of single crochet stitches over the edges of the pieces of fabric.
Holding the two pieces together where you want a seam, do a single crochet join* into the first stitch of both pieces. Insert your hook into the next stitch of both pieces and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull that yarn through both loops on hook. (Single crochet made) At every stitch, make a single crochet just as if you were just doing a row of single crochets into a previous row. When you have crocheted an sc into each stitch across, finish off securely and weave in ends.
*Single Crochet Join: Make a slip knot and keep that loop on your hook. Holding your two pieces like you had just turned to crochet a new row, insert your hook into the first stitch on the right (what would be the first stitch of a new row), pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops. Single crochet join made.
Step 1: Seam the back piece and bottom piece of the backpack
When assembling this bag, you need to decide which side of each piece will be on the inside of the bag and which side will be on the outside of the bag. For the bottom and the back, I just decided based on how the stitches looked to me. Which side looks better to display?
Take the bottom piece and find the long edge with the starting chain and row 1. Line that edge up with the bottom edge (the starting chain/row 1 edge) of the back piece and stack them on top of one another with the sides designated to be on the outside facing one another. (It’s a sandwich with the good sides on the inside.)
Make your single crochet seam as discussed above. Finish off securely and weave in ends.
For this particular seam, you’re making single crochet stitches into two pieces at the chain/row 1 location. This means you will have to crochet into the row, as opposed to the loops of the stitches. (The single loop of the back bump of the chain is what would be available as loops, which I don’t think seemed secure enough.) The trick is to be consistent about where you insert your hook and make your stitch so that stitches are evenly placed. If both pieces are the same color and you’re using that yarn for the seam, having the stitches show through isn’t an issue. However, uneven stitches may have more strain on them than even stitches. You don’t want that to happen at the bottom of a bag.
Step 2: Seam the front and the bottom pieces together
At this point, you have picked which side of the bottom is the outside (and committed to it by crocheting it to the back). Figure out which is the outside of the fabric for the front of the backpack. If you have color changes, you might want the cleaner side on the outside. Make sure to keep your buttonholes at the top of the front piece.
Put your outside faces together. Line up the bottom of the front piece of the backpack with the top row of the bottom piece. Like you did for the seam in step one, crochet a single crochet seam along these two edges.
For this seam, you are crocheting into the top loops of the bottom of the bag and into the first row of the front piece of the backpack. Make sure your stitches are placed evenly into that row.
Finish off securely. Weave in ends.
Step 3: Crochet one of the sides to the bottom
For this seam you are going to line up the starting row of one of the side pieces to one of the side edges of the bottom piece. Neither piece has a set of uniform loops to stitch into. This mans you have to stitch into row 1 and the side edge at roughly the same spot for each stitch. Crochet your single crochet seam across the edges of these two pieces. Finish off securely and weave in the ends.
You’ll want to be careful to give the same amount of seam allowance for the side piece as you did for the front and the back. Do not crochet the seam two rows into the side piece if you crocheted the seam one row into the front piece. You want them to end up the same height.
Step 4: Crochet the other side to the bottom
Do the same thing for the other side piece, holding the outside of the side piece facing the outside of the bottom piece and working a single crochet seam along the edges. Make sure you are stitching into the same place on this piece as you did on the other side.
You should now have the bottom with four pieces extending from it on each of the four sides.
Step 5: Seam one of the side pieces to the front of the bag
Now that all four sides are attached to the bottom, you can move on to constructing the side seams. We will use single crochet seams for these seams as well.
Turning the bag “inside out,” line up the side edge of the side piece with the front piece. Line up the top of the side and the top of the front. This will be the top rim of the bag, so it should be even. You also want the buttonholes to line up. Pin the sides if you need to keep them lined up.
Beginning at the top end, work a single crochet seam along the sides of these two pieces. When you get to the bottom, make sure you don’t have any gaps between the bottom seams and the side seams in that corner. Construct a few additional single crochet seam stitches to close up those gaps, if necessary. Finish off securely and weave in ends.
Step 6: Seam the other side to the front of the bag
Still working with the bag “inside out,” work the single crochet seam for the other side and the front pieces. Line up the side piece and the front piece in the same way you did in step 5. Start at the top of the bag and work your way to where the bottom seams are. Fill in any gaps with additional single crochet seam stitches, if necessary. Finish off securely and weave in ends.
Step 7: Crochet the seams for one of the sides and the back
Earlier, you marked the row that would be the top of the bag on the back piece. Check to see if that still lines up with the front and side pieces. Because of seaming into different types of edges, things may line up slightly differently now. That’s ok if it happens. You want to make sure that you are creating a top that is even all the way around. Mark the new spot where the top of the bag hits on the back piece. (It is helpful to do this on both edges of the back.)
With the bag inside out, work the single crochet seam for the back piece and one of the sides. Start at the top of the piece, working your way down to the bottom seams. As before, fill in any gaps, as necessary. Finish off securely and weave in ends.
Step 8: Crochet the seam for the other side and the back piece
With the bag inside out, construct the final single crochet seam of the side piece and the back of the bag. Work from the top to the bottom, filling in any gaps, as necessary. Finish off securely and weave in ends.
You should have a bag now! It should have a bottom and four sides that come up, similar to a paper grocery bag. The exception, of course, is that the back extends for roughly 35 rows more so you can fold it over the top and front of the bag.
Step 9: Weave the drawstrings through the buttonholes
This step is fun and easy. Take your first drawstring piece and leave about six inches on the inside of the bag. You’re going to sew this six inch part to the back of the bag in the next step. Keep that six inches on the inside while you weave the rest of the drawstring through the holes.
Weave the longer end from the inside of the bag out through the first hole on the side from back to front. Weave it back in and out and in again. Now weave it out through the front buttonhole. Do the same for the drawstring piece on the other side.
Step 10: Sew the drawstrings to the inside of the back piece
Thread your yarn needle with any color yarn (these stitches will be covered up). I stitched it in the green of the drawstrings. Hand sew (like you would hand sew fabric) the drawstring pieces to the inside of the back of the backpack. I ended up with about 4″ of the drawstring against the back of the bag. Then I stitched all around the edges of the drawstrings to secure them in place.
This is what it looked like from the outside. It doesn’t have to be pretty, as the stitches will be covered up. You want them secured to the back of the bag so that when you tug on them, they will remain firmly in place at the back.
Step 11: Sew the backpack straps and hanger to the strap plate
Take each strap in turn and with your yarn needed threaded with the same color, stitch each strap securely to the strap plate. I started along the bottom of the plate, sewing the top of the straps to the bottom of the plate, stitched up each edge of the strap, stitched the top of the plate to the strap and down the other edge of the strap. You want it to be firmly in place. Stitch both of them in place in this way. Do the same thing with the hanger strap, although it won’t come down as far as the straps do.
When we use them as straps, they will be folded over the plate like shown in the next two pictures.
They totally are backpack straps!
Step 12: Sew plate 1 to the outside of the back piece
Now that you have the straps and the hanger attached to the plate, attach the plate to the outside of the backpack. I lined it up near what would be the top of the bag and to cover up the stitches for the drawstrings. You’ll want to use the same color yarn that you used for the plate and straps so the stitches on the plate won’t show. The stitches will not show on the inside, as they will be covered up.
I stitched all of the edges to the back of the bag, but did some additional reinforcement at the straps and hanger, too. It is really embarrassing to show you the next picture, as my stitches are so ugly. I’m showing this picture to illustrate the additional reinforcement I did at the spot of the straps. You can’t see the stitches for the edges of the plate, because I actually did that after I did the reinforcing. It doesn’t matter in what order you do those two steps.
Step 13: Sew plate 2 to the inside of the back piece
It was as I was thinking about how to secure the straps to the bag that I thought I should crochet two strap plates. This second strap plate helps cover up all of my ugly stitches and provides just a tiny bit additional reinforcement for the straps and the strap plate.
Place the second plate on the inside of the back of the backpack. Line it up with the outside plate and stitch it in place to cover up your stitches and to cover up the drawstrings. Stitch the top and bottom edges to the top and bottom edges of the plate on the other side. Same with the side edges of this plate. The idea is to have them lined up so that you can make stitches through the same spot on each plate as you sew this one.
Step 14: Sew the bottom of the backpack straps to the outside of the backpack
When we sew the backpack straps to the bottom of the bag, we want them to fold up from where they are attached. In the picture, you can see how the straps fold over the plate at the top. (You can also see this in the first picture in step 12.) At the bottom, we will have them do the same thing.
I think this next picture shows how you want to position the straps for sewing them to the bottom of the back of the bag. About 1.5″ up from the bottom of the bag, and about 1/4″ in from the side seam, sew the bottom 1.5″ of the strap to the back of the backpack. I used the same color yarn as the straps and just stitched down each row of the single crochet of the straps and along the top and the bottom to really secure them.
In this picture, you can see that the straps are pointing downward after you stitch them to the back of the bag. They fold upward when used as backpack straps.
Your backpack is done!! You have a bag with sides, a front, a back, and a bottom. It has a drawstring, a top flap, and straps! You could even hang it from the hanger between the straps. Obviously, because it isn’t lined, you probably don’t want to put pens or crochet hooks loose in here. But it is perfect for carrying large light objects like yarn and sweatshirts.
Step 15: Embellish the flap
With flowers, leaves, dragonflies, or other embellishments, decorate the flap that folds down to the front of the bag. Embellish any other part of the bag that you want to decorate. I have thought about sewing leaves to the straps and leaves to the bottom of the drawstrings. I think it would be cute to do vines in surface crochet along the flap, too. Let your imagination and creativity make your bag yours!
