Local 12: UC expects increase in revenue, exposure with move to Big 12 Conference

UC administrators discuss impact of the Big 12 on admissions, athletics and image

Jack Miner, vice provost for enrollment management, spoke with Local 12 News about UC’s entry into the Big 12 athletic conference and its anticipated impact on admissions for the university.

UC’s growth has been continuous for the past decade and will continue this year with enrollment this fall expected to be the largest ever with between 49,000 and 50,000 students. Miner says with entry into the Big 12 he expects UC to draw students from regions where Big 12 schools are located.

UC joined the Big 12 officially on July 1 along with Brigham Young University, the University of Central Florida and the University of Houston. UC merchandise with the Big 12 logo is now officially on sale in the UC Bookstore.

“We’ll have people in the Houston market, we will have people in the Orlando market, in the Morgantown market, to talk about Cincinnati, and so they will see Cincinnati as a destination city,” Miner told Local 12 for a story.

Maggie McKinley, deputy athletics director, told Local 12 that UC’s opening Big 12 football against Oklahoma is already attracting attention.

“They’ve already asked for their full allotment of opposing fan tickets,” McKinley told Local 12. “So that’s 3,000 tickets that are coming in as Oklahoma fans come in, maybe more on the secondary market. We are hoping our fans hold onto their tickets to drown out those fans because that’s our Big 12 homecoming game.”
