Where was Poldark filmed?
Poldark is the smash hit historical drama based on a series of books with the same name, set in Cornwall and tracking the life of Ross Poldark. The show ran for five seasons, with the windswept beautiful locations capturing almost as many hearts as the dashing lead characters. But if you want to follow in Poldark’s footsteps, where would you need to go? We take you to some of the best sights of the shows.
The wooded headland of Turnaware Point’s riverside was actually used in series 3 to represent France, possibly because it’s visually so different to the rest of Cornwall. This location served as the landing spot for Ross’s rowing boat when he travels to rescue Dr Dwight Enys from a French Prison. No spoilers on whether he was successful.
This real, notorious prison is actually known as one of the most Haunted places in Cornwall, having seen many hangings between 1778 and 1927. For Poldark, it was used as the prison Ross’s poaching farmhand Jim Carter was sent to in series 1. For those looking to visit, the prison is now a museum open to the public, where you can experience anything from visual recreations of prison life, including an ‘execution pit’ for hangings, right the way through to ghost tours.
Looking to emerge from the water like Aidan Turner did in that iconic Poldark scene? Look no further than Hollywell bay, a breathtaking site owned by the National Trust. This stunning stretch of sand stars as Warleggan’s beach in the second series and was the backdrop to many of the key scenes – with the crashing waves and wind almost acting as a member of the cast. A must see for fans.
Another series two star location, Park Head features all the stunning coastal views you would expect from such an iconic area, with some of the most beautiful clifftop views in the UK. If you’re an avid watcher, you’ll recognise these cliffs from some of Demelza’s most brooding walks, and glimpsed flashing by when Ross is riding on horseback through them.
The postcard perfect cobbled streets of Penberth Cove are nestled in a hidden valley between Porthcurno and Lamorna. In the show it assumes the identity of ‘Sawle Village’, home to Sam and Drake Carne, Demelza’s two brothers, and featured in many scenes.
