ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Roses Discount Store on the east side of Albany will be relocating to the west side and locals are afraid that if businesses continue to move to the west side, there will be nothing left for the east side.

“All of your industrial is on this side of town. These people still need places to buy materials. They need places to go eat. You have a lot of people who live on this side of town that are not moving anytime soon. They would love to have a place to go shop and buy clothes, a nice restaurant to go sit down and eat at,” Mitchell Nolan, an Albany business owner, said.

The Albany Roses store for nearly 50 years has served the east side community of Albany, but due to lack of upkeep, the store has seen its fair share of problems.

In the summer of 2023, WALB reported air conditioning problems that caused the store to temporarily shut down. The store has had several other maintenance issues because the building has been in disrepair.

“For some years now, this Roses shopping center here been having some problems with air conditioning, potholes in the parking lot, raining on the inside, trees growing on the top of the roof. We had a great concern,” Pastor of Bible Way Missionary Baptist Church Donny Green said.

Even with the Roses relocating to another side of town, Nolan has high hopes for the future of the plaza.

“I would love to see someone come in here and redevelop this corner. I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen, whether it’s the owners of the Roses shopping center or myself,” Nolan said.

The new Roses store will be open to the public on April 11 and the hope is that it will provide a quality shopping experience to all of Albany.

Sources tell WALB that redeveloping the plaza could happen sooner than many believe.

“This property is about 10 acres. They are going to subdivide it, and there are going to be new places that are going to come. Like I said, I’m not at liberty to discuss, but I think that what’s going to come, they will be proud of,” Albany Ward 1 City Commissioner Jon Howard said.

The new Roses store, located at 2525 Dawson Rd suite 400, will be open to the public on April 11, and the hope is that it will provide a quality shopping experience to all of Albany.
