The home of hockey in Winnipeg is celebrating its 10th birthday next week.

True North Sports & Entertainment will host a party for MTS Centre on Tuesday, Nov. 18, marking the 10th anniversary of the opening of the downtown arena. The Winnipeg Jets host the New Jersey Devils that evening, and 15,000 fans will receive a limited-edition MTS Centre lithograph.

TNSE will also put together a number of sports and entertainment photos along the Hargrave skywalk, and will show a tribute video prior to the hockey game.

“(Our) full-time staff of 190 and part time-team of 800 are excited beyond words to celebrate the 10 years since MTS Centre opened its doors,” TNSE executive chairman and Winnipeg Jets governor Mark Chipman said in a statement.

“The goal when opening MTS Centre was to enhance Winnipeg’s downtown by hosting premier sports and entertainment in a world-class facility. On a night where the Winnipeg Jets will play their 121st National Hockey League game at MTS Centre, we are proud to recognize the building’s rich history.”

Construction of the 440,000 square foot facility started Apr. 16, 2003, on the site of the original Eaton’s store. The building, which replaced the Winnipeg Arena, officially opened its doors for a celebration concert on Nov. 16, 2004, with the Manitoba Moose kicking off the building’s hockey history the following night.

According to TNSE, MTS Centre has hosted almost 1,400 events and seen approximately 9.8 million patrons come through its doors over the last 10 years.
