Tanner's Big Orange in Greenville set to close at end of year
An iconic restaurant in Greenville, South Carolina, has announced it is closing.
Tanner's Big Orange on South Pleasantburg Drive will close on Dec. 23.
John Zeller, the fourth-generation owner of the restaurant, told WYFF News 4 Jane Robelot that he is selling the property and the building will be torn down.
When asked why he was closing on Dec. 23, Zeller said because so many people depend on Tanner’s Big Orange drink for their holiday parties, and he wants to keep Christmas traditions going for people in the community for one more season.
Zeller said he’s keeping much of the equipment and the intellectual property, so no one gets their hands on the recipe for that famous Big Orange drink.
Zeller said his father had recently died and that "kinda took some of the wind out of my sails, Tanner’s doesn’t seem the same without him."
Tanner's celebrated 50 years in 2016 and WYFF News 4 was there. Watch that story here.
He said he is also coming up on his 70th birthday and recently had two surgeries.
Zeller told Robelot that his great-grandfather Erwin Tanner started the business with his brother Claude 79 years ago.
"Tanner's has been a lighthouse for my family," Zeller said Wednesday.
The most recent location on South Pleasantburg, known for the big orange sign with the hot dog, opened in 1966.
Zeller said he's taking the hot dog with him, but the orange sign will be torn down.
