Die Paperworld – The World of Office and Stationery – ist einzigartig – nicht

Paperworld – The World of Office and Stationery – is a unique event, not only 

because it offers the world’s largest selection of paper, stationery and office 

supplies. TOP FAIR spoke to director, Michael Reichold. 

Was hat die Paperworld 2012 als internationale Leitmesse 

der PBS-Branche ihren Besuchern zu bieten? 

„Die Paperworld bietet einen kompakten Überblick über die gesamte 

internationale PBS-Branche, präsentiert Neuheiten und stellt neue 

Geschäftschancen in Aussicht. An vier Messetagen kommen Produzenten, 

Lieferanten und Einkäufer aus über 140 Nationen zusammen. In Sonderschauen, 

Vorträgen und Events werden die Themen der Branche anschaulich 

präsentiert – dies ist in dieser Form nur in Frankfurt am Main zu finden.“ 

Paperworld, Creativeworld und Christmasworld finden parallel 

statt. Welche Vorteile hat der Messeverbund für den 

Handel? 

„Die Parallelität von Paperworld, Creativeworld und

talks and events in a manner unique to Frankfurt/Main.

What are the advantages of the trade fair alliance as far as retailers 

are concerned?

BMWi (German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology). Seventeen young companies 

from Germany have registered their attendance. The selection of items ranges from fragrant 

postcards, table sets and stamps to 3D puzzles.

Frau Barth-Gillhaus, wie kann der Einzelhandel, insbesondere 

der Fachhandel das beträchtliche Marktpotenzial nützen? 

„In der Branche sind die Preise weitestgehend ausgereizt. Auf 

Dauer können nur Service und Qualität gewinnen. Darin sind sich Branchen- 

und Abverkaufsexperten einig. Service und Qualität bilden sozusagen den 

genetischen Erfolgscode der kleineren und inhabergeführten Fachgeschäfte, 

die die PBS-Branche dominieren. Dieser Vertriebsweg ist von jeher 

Marktführer in Sachen Kundennähe. Das hat ihn zum zweitwichtigsten 

Marktteilnehmer gemacht, der allerdings Marktanteile abgibt. Umso mehr 

gilt es, die eigenen Chancen zu nutzen respektive auszubauen. Zwar wissen 

auch E-Commerce-Anbieter viel, für manche sogar erschreckend viel über 

Stammkunden, aber das ist nicht die Formel für Bindung. Persönlichkeit, 

Emotionalität und Erlebnis machen erfolgreichen Fachhandel aus. Positionierung 

mit dem Ziel der lokalen Marktführerschaft, Profilierung und 

Differenzierung vom Wettbewerb sowie Dienstleistungsorientierung sind 

die Schlüsselstrategien, die auch die Kölner Marktspezialisten von marketmedia24 

empfehlen, um im weiter wachsenden Wettbewerb zu bestehen.“ 

Multichannel- und Omnichannel-Strategien sind Trend. 

Zu Recht? 

„Trend würde ich es gar nicht nennen wollen. Ware sucht sich 

ihren Weg, diese Weisheit galt schon, bevor an das Internet zum ersten 

Mal gedacht wurde. Und da inzwischen Produkte standardmäßig übers 

World Wide Web vertrieben werden, bei denen das Fühlen, Passen und das 

Bequemsein wesentlich wichtiger sind als beim PBS-Sortiment, kann das 

„Ob“ in der PBS-Branche keine Frage sein. 

Die Besonderheit ist, dass hier bislang die Hauptnachfrage aus 

dem gewerblichen Bereich stammt, und zwar getrieben von Menge und 

Preis. Das wird sich mit dem Nachrücken der sogenannten Internet- 

Generation bald ändern. Selbst die PBS-Fangemeinde, die an

Laut der Studie „Markt: Monitor Papier, Bürobedarf und 

Schreibwaren“ der BBE Handelsberatung (München) und 

von marketmedia 24 (Köln) ist das Marktvolumen der 

Branche 2010 auf 14,042 Millarden Euro angewachsen. Vor 

allem der Fachhandel kann davon profitieren. Wir spra- 

chen mit Eva-Barth Gillhaus vom Netzwerk KOM:pakt und 

Mitverfasserin des Markt:Monitors. 

A study whose title roughly translates as “Monitoring the 

Stationery and Office Supplies Market” (German: “Markt: 

Monitor Papier, Bürobedarf und Schreibwaren 2011”) and 

which was conducted by BBE Handelsberatung (Munich) 

and marketmedia 24 (Cologne) revealed that in 2010 sales 

in the stationery and office supplies sector reached 

14.042bn euros. This trend is certainly good news for 

retailers. We spoke to Eva-Barth Gillhaus from the 

network KOM:pakt and co-author of the study. 

Hochwertigkeit, Qualität, Exklusivität und Marken Freude hat und eigentlich 

das haptische Erlebnis bevorzugt, wird künftig am Bildschirm auch für 

PBS die Kreditkarte zücken. Experten erwarten, dass bis 2020 der Internethandel 

etwa 20 Prozent des gesamten Einzelhandels ausmacht. Die 

PBS-Branche wird sicherlich an dieser Entwicklung teilhaben. Das bedeutet 

für stationäre Händler, die dabei nicht nur zusehen wollen, sich selbst auf 

diesen Vertriebsweg zu begeben. Übrigens kann der Fachhandel auch hier 

mit Kundennähe, Qualität und Service punkten.“

Ms Barth-Gillhaus, how can retailers, in particular specialist 

stores, exploit this market potential? 

“In this sector there’s not much anyone can do about price. In the 

long run, service and quality are the things that count. That’s something 

that industry analysts and sales experts agree on. In other words, service

sector. This distribution channel has always been the market leader in 

terms of customer proximity. That is what has made it the second most 

important player in the market. It is essential that specialist retailers take 

advantage of the opportunities they have and continue to build on them, all 

the more so as they are starting to lose market share. It is true to say that 

online retailers know a lot, for some people too much, about their regular 

customers, but that still doesn’t make it the right formula to reinforce customer 

loyalty. Character, emotional appeal and a world of experiences are 

the distinguishing features of specialist stores. Cologne-based market specialists 

marketmedia24 recommend that specialist retailers position them-

selves with the aim of becoming the market leader in the local area, find 

ways to distinguish themselves from the competition and foster a highlyservice 

oriented culture as the key strategies to survive in the face of 

growing competition.” 

Multi-channel and omni-channel strategies are the latest hot topics. 

Is that justified? 

“I wouldn’t exactly call it a trend. Goods find their way to the customer: 

these words of wisdom held true long before anyone had thought of 

the internet. It is now the norm for customers to shop online for products 

which they traditionally wanted to touch, try on and feel comfortable in. As 

this could never exactly be said for paper, stationery and office supply 

products, it is not really a question of “whether” this channel is an option. 

However, until now the online demand has mainly come from 

businesses buying large quantities at low prices. This situation is likely to 

change as soon as the so-called internet generation takes over. Even the 

dedicated fan base of specialist stores who express a genuine appreciation 

for premium products, high quality, exclusivity and branded products, and 

typically also want to enjoy the haptic experience, will soon be the people 

sitting at their computers with a credit card in hand. Experts expect that by 

2020 online sales will account for about 20 percent of the total retail market. 

The paper, stationery and office supplies sector is certain to be a part 

of this development. This means that if store-based retailers don’t just 

want to watch from the sidelines, they will also have to start operating 

online retail formats. Here, too, specialist retailers can score points with 

customer proximity, quality and service.”

gfk-Studie: die deutschen schenken gerne 

Eine Studie der GfK Marktforschung im Auftrag der Messe 

Frankfurt für die Konsumgütermesse Tendence zeigt: 

27 Milliarden Euro geben die Deutschen im Jahr für 

Geschenke aus. 

Pro Person sind das rund 400 Euro. Bei der Berechnung wurde von einer 

Konsumentengruppe von 67 Millionen Einwohnern im Alter ab 14 Jahren 

ausgegangen. 

Der stationäre Handel bleibt die Nummer eins: Denn mehr als die 

Hälfte der Befragten erwirbt die Präsente in Geschäften – ausschließlich 

im Internet kauft keiner der Konsumenten. 

Die Studie unterscheidet acht Konsumententypen. Die „Bodenständigen“ 

kaufen am häufigsten in Geschäften. „Abenteurer“, „Weltoffene“ und 

„Häusliche“ hingegen erwerben ihre Präsente zu gleichen Teilen in 

Geschäften wie im Internet. „Realisten“ nennen zwar die meisten 

Geschenkanlässe, die durchschnittlich höchsten Beträge für Geschenke 

werden allerdings von den „Anspruchsvollen“, „Weltoffenen“ und 

„Bodenständigen“ ausgegeben. Typenübergreifend sind Personen mit 

höherer Schulbildung, hohem Einkommen und einem Alter zwischen 30 und 

59 Jahren die großzügigsten Schenker. Pflegen die Verbraucher selbst 

einen gehobenen Lifestyle und Konsumstil, sind sie auch bereit, mehr Geld 

für Geschenke auszugeben. 

Die beliebteste Geschenkanlässe sind „Geburtstage“ und „Weihnachten“. 

Die große Bedeutung des Weihnachtsgeschäftes für den Handel 

spiegelt sich auch in den Umfrageergebnissen wider: Mit 218,30 Euro sind 

die Befragten hier am spendabelsten. 

Besonders bemerkenswert: Ca. 50 % wählen selbst kein Präsent aus. Sie 

verschenken Bargeld, damit sich die Beschenkten selbst das Präsent 

kaufen können. Für den Handel ist das eine potenzielle Herausforderung. 

Er muss kreativ sein, um die Verbraucher wieder für den 

Geschenkekauf in die Läden zu locken.

gfk study: germans love to give 

A study by market research company GfK Marktforschung 

commissioned by Messe Frankfurt for the Tendence con- 

sumer goods trade fair reveals: Germans spend 27bn euros 

a year on gifts. 

This comes to approximately 400 euros per person. A consumer group consisting 

of 67 million people over the age of 14 was taken as the basis for 

this calculation. 

Store based retail formats are still the number one: over half of the 

people interviewed purchase their gifts in shops – none of them only purchased 

items over the internet. 

The study differentiates between eight consumer types. “Down-toearth” 

consumers usually make their purchases in shops. The “adventurers”, 

“cosmopolitan” and “home-loving” consumers, on the other hand, buy as 

many gifts in shops as they do over the internet. Although the “realists” 

can think of more occasions for buying gifts than anyone else, on average 

the “sophisticated”, the “cosmopolitan” and the “down-to-earth” consumers 

spend more on gifts. From all of these categories, people with a 

high degree of professional training and education and a high income, aged 

between 30 and 59, are the most generous when it comes to gift giving. 

People who enjoy an extravagant lifestyle and culture of consumption are 

also prepared to spend more on gifts. 

The most popular occasions throughout the year that involve giving 

gifts are “birthdays” and “Christmas”. The crucial importance of the 

Christmas trade for retailers is reflected in the results of the study: 

Christmas is the most generous time of the year – the research showed 

that on average people spend 218.30 euros. 

Also worth a mention: approximately 50% of the interviewees said that 

they don’t choose the gifts themselves. They give money as a gift so that 

the person receiving the gift can choose whatever he or she wants. This is 

a potential challenge for retailers. They need to be creative in order to 

tempt these consumers back into the shops to buy their gifts.

designer products made in the Lueneburg Heath area of Germany and has 

never lost sight of its fundamental social and ecological principles. 

The original office organisers have been in existence for 20 years. The 

products are developed and manufactured in Germany (Lower Saxony). The 

employees at WERKHAUS come from about 15 different countries: 15 percent 

are severely disabled and there are 24 trainees. The company uses 

medium density fibreboard made from German timbers as well as recycled 

paper and solvent-free colours. The rubber rings used in the original 

WERKHAUS connector system are made of caoutchouc (India rubber) and 

are extremely UV-resistant.

which is available in five different colours and is one of a fleet of different

Theater sit transfi xed by the incredible acrobatics, 

quick-fi re juggling and amazing illusions. You will probably not believe
