The Welding and Fabrication Department at 

NCPT Group of Colleges was treated to a 

demonstration by ESAB, one of the world 

leaders in all things welding!. 

ESAB’s Dwayne Gibson demonstrated the 

new state-of-the-art welding machines along 

with the processes and developments that are 

being adopted and pioneered by industry. The 

demonstration was attended by apprentices 

and full-time students after which the students 

had the opportunity to take part in a practical 

session with the new machines and equipment.

to be involved in trying out the fantastic new

The Rebel EMP 215ic (MIG/TIG/Stick) and

new abrasive 

waterjet line 

At EMO Hannover 2017, OMAX® Corporation 

will showcase the newly released GlobalMAX 

1530 abrasive waterjet, in Hall 15, Stand E93. 

The GlobalMAX line brings value-priced 

abrasive waterjets with the OMAX guarantee to 

the global market. The OMAX 60120 and the 

latest generation MicroMAX abrasive waterjet 

systems will also be on display during the 

show, held September 18-23 in Hannover, 

Germany. Visitors will see live cutting 

demonstrations on all three waterjets and time 

studies run on the control software by software

Visitors to the OMAX stand will also see the 

latest generation of the MicroMAX with 

OMAX's proprietary linear traction drive 

system that uses optical encoders to provide 0.1 

micron positioning accuracy. The MicroMAX’s 

cutting table is mounted on a set of vibration 

isolators to minimize transmission of external 

vibration from the floor. A tank cooling package 

allows control of the tank water temperature, 

helping to avoid any dimensional changes in 

the material being machined. 

EMO attendees can experience first-hand 

how OMAX waterjets are easy to operate. The 

Intelli-MAX control software was engineered 

specifically for use with abrasive waterjets and 

no special machine code knowledge is required 

to use it. A person unfamiliar with CNC 

machine operation can learn to cut parts on an

training for machine operation and

access training information whenever they need

subcontRactoR sets up manufactuRing cell foR 

peRkins engines 

Peterborough subcontractor Westcombe 

Engineering has installed a new manufacturing 

cell to produce increased quantities of a family of 

aluminium engine components for Perkins 

Engines. It comprises a Haas ST-30 CNC lathe 

with short bar feeder, a Blast Wash top-loading 

washing machine and a vibratory bowl finishing 

machine from PDJ Vibro, the second to be 

installed in the factory. 

Now owned by Peterborough City Council, 

Westcombe Engineering was established in the 

early 1970s by philanthropist Royce Westcombe 

to provide work and development opportunities 

in manufacturing for people with physical and 

mental disabilities, of whom 10 currently work at 

the factory. Together with seven support staff, 

they produce milled and turned parts mainly for 

nearby Perkins Engines and its parent group, 

Caterpillar. 

Westcombe Engineering’s general and 

commercial manager, Andrew Lesiw explained, 

As one of the global leaders in banking and 

retail support services Camberley, Surrey-based 

Cennox Plc is at the forefront in the battle 

against card skimming at cashpoints, 

developing components and systems that help 

banks stay one step ahead of the criminals. 

To maintain its lead Cennox has an active 

research and development program that 

requires numerous parts to be machined with 

relatively short lead-times. In addition it also 

has production parts to produce in order to 

back up the service it provided to banks in 

repairing damaged cashpoints In the past all of 

this machining work was put out to subcontract, 

but as demand grew the cost and 

delays that this created was impacting on 

productivity, so the decision was taken to 

investigate bringing machining in-house. 

After investigating the market Cennox chose 

Matchmaker CNC to supply the machine it 

required as well as providing extra support in 

pulling together a tooling and CADCAM 

package (Sharp CAM). The choice of a 

Matchmaker VMC 1020 vertical machining 

centre, with its 1100 by 560 mm table that 

allowed multiple set-ups to be in place at any 

one time was a big advantage to Cennox as 

some components require six operations and to 

have them all on the table simultaneously 

improved productivity and manufacturing 

costs considerably. 

Given Cennox’s lack of machining 

“Our latest manufacturing project is a good 

example of the applications input that we can 

provide. 

“We redesigned the engine parts so that they 

could be produced automatically and cost 

effectively from extrusion fed by a bar magazine, 

rather than from manually loaded castings.” 

When the subcontractor was previously 

making the parts by the latter production route, 

porosity in the castings resulted in a significant 

level of costly scrap. Often, the porosity became 

apparent only after a lot of value-added 

machining had been completed, which further 

increased the unit manufacturing cost of each 

good part. 

While the latest vibratory bowl, a 100-litre 

capacity model, is dedicated to finishing these 

specific Perkins engine parts, the original 220- 

litre bowl was installed in 2012 to automate 

deburring and edge-breaking of components 

machined in all of Westcombe Engineering’s 

machine tools from aluminium, cast iron, brass, 

stainless and mild steels, exotic metals and 

plastics. The intention was to eliminate 

mundane, manual finishing tasks and improve 

consistency of finish and the PDJ Vibro 

equipment succeeded in achieving both aims. 

Based on the first bowl’s reliability and 

effectiveness, Westcombe Engineering returned 

to PDJ Vibro to order a smaller finishing machine 

for integration into the Perkins engine cell. Mr 

cennox boosts R&D peRfoRmance 

experience part of Matchmaker’s role was to 

provide some ongoing support, through its 

applications engineering department, who 

worked alongside experienced R&D 

Machinist/Programmer, Craig Wilson. “The 

help we received from Matchmaker was 

excellent. Sitting down with Matchmaker’s 

applications team we have reduced cycle time 

even further, producing each part in 34 

minutes,” says Iain Ferguson Technical & 

Operations Support Manager Cennox Plc. 

Now, with the single Matchmaker VMC 

1020 in-house, Cennox is producing the same 

number of units per day with a marked 

improvement on dimensional accuracy and 

overall quality.

we expected and the support from Matchmaker 

has made the whole project run smoothly from 

start to finish.”

esab wins industrie lyon award 

ESAB France SA is proud to announce that it 

has won the Innovation Award in the “Digital 

Tools” category at Industrie Lyon 2017, held 

April 4 - 7 in Lyon. Prevailing over 160 

innovations presented, ESAB’s WeldCloud 

online data management system took the 

winning spot for its ability to provide digital 

solutions that optimise welding and associated 

manufacturing activities. Industrie Lyon is held 

every 2 years, hosting 21,000 visitors and 900 

exhibitors, including ESAB. The fair showcases 

a global range of manufacturing equipment and 

services, and Industrie Lyon has presented the 

Innovation Award for 15 years. 

To win the award, Antony Fernandes and 

Florent Dourlens — and 160 other entrants — 

presented to a committee of 22 people 

comprised of technical journalists and 

representatives of the industrial scientific 

community. The committee narrowed these

Lean Production Machine (LPM) is a case in 

point for specialist manufacturer of precision 

quality industrial blades and machine knives, 

Horsham-based Precision Edge and its director 

Ross Candfield. 

“We initially considered buying an XYZ 

LPM machining centre five years ago, but after 

due consideration we decided our workload 

wasn’t quite right for the machine and went for 

an XYZ SMX 5000 bed mill with the ProtoTRAK 

SMX control instead,” says Ross Candfield. At 

the time Precision Edge was machining a lot of 

profiles, so the bed size and capability of the 

SMX 5000 was ideal for its needs alongside an 

existing SMX 4000 bed mill. As time went on 

workloads changed and Precision Edge needed 

additional capacity, with the LPM still in mind 

it returned to XYZ, but came away with one of 

its innovative XYZ 2-OP machining centres. 

After having the 2-OP for 18 months, 

business growth meant a need for further 

machining centre capacity and the advantages 

seen from of the XYZ 2-OP, with its ProtoTRAK 

control and Jergens Ball Lock table finally 

created the opening for an XYZ LPM to 

complete Precision Edge’s machining 

capabilities. 

“With already having the 2-OP, the addition 

of the LPM was straightforward as the 

programs are compatible between the two 

ProtoTRAK controls and the fixture plates that 

entrants down to 16 innovations representing 

four categories: Digital Tools, Sustainability, 

Industrial Performance and New Technologies. 

In the Digital Tools category, ESAB won over 

nominees Siemens, Schunk and Pro Dis (view 

video featuring Antony Fernandes). More than 

900 people attended the award ceremony.

The XYZ LPM is a compact machining

FANUC, the global manufacturer of factory 

automation solutions, is launching a purposebuilt 

training academy at its new 107,000 sq ft 

facility in Ansty Park, Coventry. 

The academy, which is more than four times 

the size of FANUC’s previous facility at the 

Seven Stars Industrial Estate, includes more 

than £300,000-worth of brand new equipment, 

allowing students to receive practical training 

in a safe, controlled environment. 

The academy features eight cells of new 

FANUC M-20 and M-10 robots, as well as a 

ROBOCUT (wire electro-discharge cutting), 

ROBODRILL (highspeed milling) and a 

ROBOSHOT (injection moulding). The 

academy also includes two established robot 

models, which can be stripped down and 

rebuilt for maintenance training. 

Each machine is equipped with the latest 

touchscreen teach pendant and human-machine 

interface (HMI) technology. The machines are 

smaller versions of the FANUC models on sale 

and operate at a teach speed, allowing students 

to work on them at their own pace. 

The basic introductory course, which lasts 

for around five days, allows students to learn 

the fundamentals of machine operation, from 

basic safety protocol to programming and 

control. The academy also offers advanced and 

maintenance courses, as well as bespoke 

programmes. Applications are accepted from 

both experienced and first-time users of 

automated machinery. 

The FANUC academy is one of several 

similar facilities at various locations around the 

world, helping customers to increase their 

productivity and minimise downtime by giving 

them the knowledge they need to work and 

maintain their machines without requiring the 

assistance of a FANUC engineer.

Tamworth cutting tool specialist Industrial 

Tooling Corporation (ITC) has now 

announced the arrival of the new AG90 fixed 

90-degree angle head from BIG KAISER. The 

new AG90 is a lightweight system with a BT30 

(BIG-PLUS) taper that is regarded as one of the 

worlds lightest and most robust angle heads. 

As part of the BIG KAISER family of angle 

heads, the new AG90 

weighs less than 2kg, 

making it compatible with 

the automatic tool change 

system on small machine tools. By 

allowing vertical, horizontal and 

angular operations without 

repositioning the workpiece, BIG KAISER 

angle heads increase accuracy and 

productivity. Being able to use just a single setup 

also change the angle of the cutter through 

a 360 degree range, speeds up production and 

eliminates errors due to multiple set-ups. The 

new angle head also enables users to benefit 

from new capabilities without replacing

In June 2003 RDL began its relationship 

with Star GB by purchasing its first Star 

sliding head machine, an SB-16C. This was 

followed in 2007 by the installation of a new 

Star SR-20RII increasing their capacity from 

16mm to 20mm. In 2010, two more Star 

machines entered the machine shop, a second 

SR-20RII and a 9 axis Star SV-20 sliding head. 

In 2011, machine capacity was again 

increased from 20mm to 32mm with a Star 

SR-32JN and this was followed in 2014 by 

another Star SR-32JN together with SV-32. 

This gradual increase in dimensional 

while keeping its weight down to the absolute

Referring to the milling capacity of the

on the ST-38. As Mr Lockwood continues: 

“Most people would think that the part was 

machined on a machining centre, but we can 

do it on the Star ST-38. Machined from 

EN16T, which is quite heavy duty, it shows 

the capability of the machine when 

machining this high tensile material. By 

doing it on the ST-38, we could machine the 

job through the night, which makes it more 

profitable for the company.” 

“We have another job that used to be 

machined on our Star SR-20II and then 

finished machined on a machining centre. 

We can now machine this type of part in a 

single set-up on the ST-38, saving us 

considerable set-up and machining time as 

well as enhancing precision.”

VERICUT User Exchange (VUE) meetings 

around the world for its customers and 

partners. In 2016, more than 1,600 VERICUT 

users attended over 45 VUE events in 15

ABRASIVES, HONING & FINISHING 

FINISHING ON A HIGH NOTE 

It would be lovely to think that components 

emerge from a mill, lathe, punch press or laser 

cutter all ready for delivery to the customer. In 

reality, however, some form of finishing or 

cleaning is usually required. There are many 

different reasons for this, but quite often the 

need for additional processing is driven by 

customer demands for high levels of surface 

finish. 

Indeed, Advanced Grinding Solutions (AGS) 

says it has received a number of enquiries for 

lapping machines since being appointed as the 

sole UK distributor for the FLP range of 

machines. FLP constructs new single-disc and 

double-disc machines, and offers rebuilt used 

machines, often from stock, which have been remanufactured 

to as-new standard. The company 

can also supply replacement spare and wear 

parts for all market-established machines, such 

as those from Stähli, Wolters, Wenzky, 

Melchiorre, Lapmaster and Speedfam. 

It is the rebuild option that seems to have 

attracted a lot of attention from UK companies 

looking to update their in-house lapping and 

fine-grinding capabilities without incurring the 

costs of purchasing new machines. Many 

customers choose to acquire rebuilt machines 

rather than having their own machines 

overhauled as it means that production is not 

affected and costs remain more or less the same. 

Furthermore, customers can always opt at a later 

date to send old machines to FLP by way of a 

part-exchange deal. 

Regardless of the type and size of a 

customer’s old fine-grinding, flat-honing, 

lapping or polishing machine – FLP will carry 

out process and technology orientated 

improvements and general overhauls. Processes 

include the replacement of sub-assemblies for 

which spare parts can no longer be supplied, 

retrofitting of automation such as PLCs, and the 

replacement of materials with more wear 

resistant types, such as rustproof steel. 

So, what of the precision finishing of 

cylindrical parts? Well, honing is the historical 

process of choice, although many are wary of 

the sometimes high purchase price associated 

with advanced honing machines. To address the 

affordability issue, Hurco says that precision 

honing can now be performed on one of its 

standard vertical machining centres. Through a 

partnership with Indiana-based honing 

specialist Bates Technologies, the solution offers 

advantages over dedicated honing machines 

that include reduced investment costs and fewer 

set-ups. 

The process is performed on a Hurco VMX 

series BT40 vertical machining centre as follows. 

First, a touch probe held in the tool magazine is 

deployed in the spindle to verify the bore 

diameter and ensure that the correct program is 

loaded. The probe then takes another 

measurement further into the bore to ensure it is 

straight enough to be machined. Assuming it is 

straight, the diameter is rough-bored to the 

correct size for honing. A honing tool with a 

standard back end is then exchanged 

automatically into the spindle and throughcoolant 

is used to activate and control tool 

expansion, pushing the stones outward while 

the hone reciprocates and rotates. An in-process 

air-gauge system enables bore size to be 

monitored continuously. 

Once the programmed diameter is achieved, 

a signal is sent from the air gauge to the Max 

control of the Hurco machining centre to stop 

the honing cycle. Finally, the bore is brushed 

with a soft-finish hone to smooth the high points 

and provide the required surface finish. Once 

again, coolant is used to control expansion and 

pressure. 

For those with more ‘regular’ finishing 

requirements, such as deburring for example, 

vibratory-based machines remain popular. A 

case in point can be seen at London-based Leon 

Paul Equipment, a manufacturer of fencing 

equipment as seen in last year’s Rio Olympics. 

The sport of fencing demands that foils, epees 

and sabres are finished to a very high standard. 

To this end, a focus on deburring and surface 

treatment has seen two more vibratory 

machines installed by PDJ Vibro. 

“Five years ago we started producing a new 

pistol grip called Evolution for our epees and 

foils,” explains Jack Jacob, works manager at 

Leon Paul Equipment, which is based in the 

Brent Cross area of northwest London. 

“However, it presented us with the problem of 

how to achieve the required uniformity of 

mottling and smoothness on the surface of the 

aluminium investment castings.” 

So for the first time at Leon Paul, traditional 

hand-finishing techniques were replaced with 

automated de-flashing and surface treatment in 

a vibratory bowl supplied by PDJ Vibro. Since 

then, the company has added aluminium guards 

to the list of parts finished in this way. Sharp 

edges and flash are removed from the aerospace 

grade aluminium pressings that form the guards 

of foils and sabres. 

Around half of the guards are polished 

manually to achieve a glossy surface. However, 

at the end of last year the company decided to 

look at automation. Again Leon Paul turned to 

PDJ Vibro and after the successful completion of 

trials, a second vibratory bowl was delivered 

along with a supply of small porcelain balls for 

burnishing the guards and a liquid polishing 

medium to ensure a bright finish. 

For the deburring of flat plasma/oxy 

fuel/laser cut parts, it may be of interest to learn 

that Ficep UK has been appointed as the 

exclusive UK agent for Costa Lev machines. 

Parts up to more than 400mm thick, and more 

than 3,000mm wide, can be processed at feeding 

speeds of up to 50m/min. Target application 

include the removal of slag, burrs and oxide, 

even when parts are warped or uneven. 

Once finishing operations are complete, only 

cleaning/degreasing remains before parts head 

for the dispatch department. As the final 

operation, process/machine choice is vital. 

“Quality comes first without any 

compromise,” is the ethos of Gamebore 

Cartridge, a Hull-based manufacturer of 

shotgun cartridges that contacted MecWash 

when a new component cleaning system was 

needed. MecWash recommended the 

installation of a Duo 400, an aqueous cleaning 

system which can be applied to even the 

smallest of parts, such as the diamond shot used 

in manufacturing Gamebore’s cartridges. 

“We have been delighted with the quality of 

cleaning achieved by the Duo 400 because of the 

pristine finish it offers,” says Phil Plowman, 

director at Gamebore. “This is vital as any 

specks of dirt, even the smallest amount, will 

affect the accuracy and repeatability of the final 

shot, both of which are critical factors in 

successful competition shooting.”

RK International Machine Tools has announced 

the arrival of the Robbi Omicron IGU highprecision 

CNC internal grinder to its range. 

This versatile and accurate machine features a 

four position spindle turret that can be 

configured in a multitude of set-ups to include 

internal and external grinding wheels, with an 

additional position for a tailstock to allow 

centring of the workpiece. 

In addition to the versatility provided by the 

spindle turret, the Omicron IGU benefits from 

Robbi’s exceptional build quality. The Italybased 

machine tool builder mixes the highest 

technology and design with competitive pricing 

and the Omicron IGU features a solid granite 

machine base to provide thermal stability, 

rigidity is aided by the use of roller linear 

guides that as well as improving rigidity also 

reducing stick-slip for increased speed and 

acceleration. To maintain the high precision 

grinding accuracies, absolute linear encoders 

are used on the X and Z axes for maximum 

positional and repeatability performance. 

With a footprint of 2600 mm by 1600 mm the 

Omicron IGU is a fairly compact machine but 

presents impressive capabilities, with axis 

travels of 450 x 650 mm in X and Z axes, with a 

maximum workpiece diameter of 650 mm and 

200 mm maximum diameter for both internal 

and external grinding. The spindle turret has a 

repeatability accuracy of 2 arc seconds with a 

total swivelling range of -5 deg to + 275 deg 

with a resolution of 0.001 deg. 

The CNC control is provided by Robbi’s 

tried and trusted solution in collaboration with 

Siemens. The 840D sl control system, that in 

addition to an array of standard internal and 

external grinding programs the intuitive 

interface allows more complex programs to be 

created without any ISO G-code knowledge, 

with a summary of the program highlighted on 

screen to avoid any potential errors. The control 

also features three options for shoulder 

grinding, which can be achieved manually, 

automatically, or with the addition of gap 

control, the latter aiding cycle time reductions. 

Wheel dressing is also carried out automatically 

either outside the grinding cycle, automatically 

as part of the cycle, automatically at specified 

intervals or on demand.

aluminium mirror finish no 

longer a challenge 

Kemet International launched their new Kemox 

SF slurry only 3 months ago and it has already 

been found to be a perfect solution for aluminium 

mirror polishing, prior to super finishing, by 

Professor David Walker, Professor of Ultra 

Precision Surfaces at Huddersfield University. 

Their application involved polishing a 

480mmø aluminium mirror for the LOCUS 

project. This being a proposed space mission to 

observe the Earth’s atmosphere at grazing 

incidence, giving long path-lengths, to measure 

pollutant chemical species. It is based on an offaxis 

Cassegrain telescope design, for cryogenic 

operation in the TeraHz (microwave) and nearinfrared 

regions. 

The mirror was first CNC milled to generate 

an off axis parabolic surface, and then pre lapped 

to generate a uniform grey surface. A variety of 

polishing slurries were tested, but these couldn’t 

produce a uniform polished surface, and some 

crystallised too quickly, clogging up the 

dispenser system. 

Kemet recognised these issues and supplied 

their Kemox SF slurry as a solution. This not only 

produced a uniform polished surface, but also 

reduced the polishing time and alleviated the 

slurry clogging issue. 

Finally the mirror was super finished using 

Kemet’s COL-K NC non-crystallising colloidal 

slurry producing a texture of 6nm. 

From first contact with Kemet to producing a 

finished mirror took only 2 weeks. If you think

sulphuric acid). 

One of the firms that has developed both 

alternatives is Galvatek, a manufacturer of 

surface treatment lines. They are represented 

in the UK by Turbex, which announces the 

availability of the processes to British 

industry. The environmentally friendlier 

systems comply with the REACH regulation 

and are also significantly easier and less 

costly to use. 

Galvatek senior adviser Arto Jämsén said, 

“The benefits of using chromic acid 

anodizing (CAA) have been its excellent 

resilience, low friction and anti-corrosive 

properties. 

“The problem is that toxins are released 

when manufacturing and processing 

chromed components, so it is understandable 

that the EU wants to discontinue it in order to 

reduce pollution and make the working 

environment safer. 

“Replacing CAA with TSA can halve both 

power consumption and anodising time. It 

also requires less air extraction, resulting in a 

significant reduction in energy consumption. 

Further savings are gained during waste 

water processing. 

“What is most important is that the 

treated components are at least as good as 

they would have been using the old CAA 

process.” 

Patricomp in Halli, Finland, part of the 

Spanish Aernnova Aerospace Corporation, 

supplies components to the aerospace

machines since being appointed as the sole

appointed Office Manager at AGS comments:

OF from 400mm to 1,200mm in diameter 

with diamond and CBN in a vitrified bond 

that generate perfect flatness and high 

quality surface finishes on a variety of 

materials including difficult to machine 

carbide and ceramics. The vitrified bond 

system allows easy cutting and it is possible 

to achieve considerable increases in 

production when lapping components with 

the Krebs & Riedel lapping wheels.

at the NEC in Birmingham whereby they will 

be showing a lapping machine on Advanced

5-axis clamping 

As a key innovator in Industry 4.0, 

Roemheld offers a wide range of products 

designed to support a ‘smart factory’ 

environment. These tackle the challenges 

companies face when looking to increase 

automation within the manufacturing

5-Axis clamping can present particular 

challenges and so Roemheld has developed 

an electronic wireless pressure sensor. This 

offers stationary and mobile measurement 

of rotating or hard-to-reach sections of 

hydraulic clamping fixtures. Designed for 

use with automatic manufacturing systems, 

transfer lines, assembly lines and rotary 

indexing fixtures and tables, up to 16 

pressure sensors can be individually 

configured and monitored from a single 

receiver. Ideal for applications where wired 

connections are impractical or too 

expensive, the wireless electronic pressure 

sensor uses radio transmission with a freefield 

indoor range of up to 300m and an 

outdoor range of 60m. The wireless 

electronic pressure sensor enables the 

pressure of single or multiple points to be 

checked simultaneously during start-up and 

maintenance with minimum installation 

costs. 

The electronic wireless pressure sensor 

proved key to a research project that 

Roemheld collaborated on with the 

Manufacturing Technology Centre, based in 

the Midlands. The project involved running 

tests to measure the effects of centrifugal 

forces on hydraulic fixtures. So being able 

to use a wireless pressure sensor to monitor 

multiple, moving sections at the same time 

was extremely advantageous.

Machines can be supplied as complete turn-

with internal cooling directly to the cutting 

edge are the latest additions to the products 

Horn offers for boring, profiling and 

grooving. 

The new ranges of insert tooling are well 

suited to machining aluminium, sintered 

carbide, ceramics and plastics. The tools are 

also designed for tackling non-ferrous 

materials that are either very abrasive due to 

their high silicon content or have a tendency 

to exhibit chipping problems and form builtup 

edges. 

Supermini tools with CVD-D or PCD 

cutting edges are available in diameters from 

1.5 mm and with three different geometries 

to suit the application. H0 geometry with a 

rake angle of zero degrees is for machining 

key packages including production of 

crowned gears, tapered gears, skiving and 

deburring. In addition, associated 

automation can include ring loaders, 

stockers, conveyors and robotic loading. 

The gear cutting machines include 

hobbing, shaping and shaving processes plus 

a range of gear chamfering and deburring 

equipment. Initially 2D CNC will be 

marketing and supporting the high speed 

hobbing machine range. These machines 

start at the H80 which has a maximum 

capacity of 80 mm, module M2.5 with a high 

speed (3,000 revs/min) zero backlash 7.5 kW 

hob spindle to the H500 with a capacity of 

500 mm. The H500 has a workpiece module 

M12 and a 25.5 kW spindle.

H5 geometry with a rake angle of 5 

degrees is used to machine abrasive and soft 

materials, including aluminium alloys with a 

high silicon content, fibre-reinforced plastics 

and other plastics with abrasive content. 

Diamond is also used successfully as a 

cutting material without chipping problems 

when working with precious metals and 

non-ferrous heavy metals such as platinum, 

iridium, gold, tantalum and titanium, as well 

as sintered metals like tungsten copper. 

The specially developed, active HF chip 

breaker geometry solves virtually all 

machining problems caused by uncontrolled, 

stringy swarf. It is intended for use on longchipping, 

non-ferrous metals such as all 

wrought aluminium alloys, and also copper 

and its alloys such as bronze and both leadfree 

and low-lead (long-chipping) brass.

Swiss sheet metalworking machinery 

manufacturer, Bystronic, has introduced a 

new app that monitors in real time all 

processes taking place within its laser cutting 

machines, press brakes and water jet cutting 

machines. Called ByCockpit, the software fits 

neatly with the digital networking 

requirements of Industry 4.0. It evaluates the 

collected data and generates status reports, 

allowing factory output to be optimised. 

During its development, Bystronic’s IT 

specialists asked a number of companies how 

they retrieve information from their sheet 

metalworking machines to analyse and 

improve their production. Most said that 

extracting data and subsequently translating 

it into usable information is very time 

consuming. Often, results were only 

available infrequently, for example at the end 

of the month or even once per quarter, 

rendering the information virtually useless 

for process optimisation. 

Running on a laptop, smartphone or 

tablet, ByCockpit generates reports while the 

machines are producing parts, providing 

immediate feedback so that action can be 

taken, if necessary. One report is the 

‘sunburst’ view, which displays the status of 

the factory at a glance. Green bars indicate 

machines that are currently in operation, 

while a red bar signifies idle time. A blue bar 

denotes machines that are connected to an 

assembly line. 

All Bystronic’s latest-generation machines 

are ready to be connected to ByCockpit. A 

connectivity kit is installed as a gateway to 

each machine, which also acts as a firewall. 

Via this connection, machine data is 

collected, encrypted and sent to a cloud 

server. The highest standards of security 

ensure that no conclusions can be drawn in 

the cloud about a user’s data. It is analysed 

and processed so that it can be visualised 

only in the customer’s ByCockpit-enabled 

devices.
