about

Pete: This one was a biggie for us. It was our second "studio" album, recorded with Dan Voss, who we knew because he was our pal, Gerritt's housemate and he had done a ton of work on the Lurker Of Chalice album. He was a pro, he was used to doing things a bit weird and we were still figuring out how to be a band on record as much as we were trying to figure out how to be a BAND band. We had hashed out a lot of these tracks on the road.. This one followed our first big tours and a heck of a lot of jamming. We had moved to Oakland a bit before starting this whole process, were living in a big warehouse that we were sharing with the likes of Eats Tapes, Grouper, Rob Fisk, some incredible artists.. we were in proximity of a bunch of great local players, Tom Carter, Gerritt, Eva Inca Ore, Axolotl, The Skaters, Jeweled Antler.. we were feeling the creative juices flowing intensely. We had been listening to a lot of large ensemble psych pop stuff on the road.. things like "Pet Sounds" and "Forever Changes" and we were living this real bohemian lifestyle in a huge space with all sorts of oddballs rolling thru that we started tossing around the idea of OUR version of a BIG NOISE FAMILY BAND style thing with all of our extremely talented and unique players in close proximity.

This was our first release for LOAD. we made this thing without having a home for it and LOAD and 5RC were our two top label choices for it.. Very thankful for Ben's taking this thing on.. AND letting us do a small run, early version on Numerical Thief, which we put out to help fund our only AUS tour.. which was a really really fun one. three weeks traveling Australia's east coast with Grey Daturas and My Disco.. That's a whoooole can of worms to get into but man it was fun. I did an alternate master for this one at one point that sounds a lot worse than the one Drew did. I might put that version up here at some point if there's interest. I also will probably add on the bonus track for the vinyl version which is a collaboration with GOD from the JYRK Jamboree tour, which is a whole other goofy story. That wax was put out by Weird Forest, who was run by an extremely reliable supporter of our, Chad Stockdale. Miss that dude and his skronk and enthusiasm. ANYWAY. I could ramble about touring and shenanigans for hours and anyone who really wants that can check that NINA interview we did. Four hours of more of this.

about

Yellow Swans Portland, Oregon

From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground, at the axis of noise, psychedelia, industrial, drone, and hardcore. Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
