Overview of the Zomi Context (Myanmar)

The Zomi are an indigenous ethnic inhabiting in the Northern Chin State (Tedim and Tonzang Townships) and in the Kabaw Valley (Kale and Tamu Townships). The Zomi population is estimated around 200,000, and schooling-aged children would be around 46,000. The majority of the Zomi, estimated about 73%, are low income families. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and political crisis in Myanmar, alongside other citizens, the Zomi are suffering from socio-economic deterioration, and children could not attend formal school classes for more than one year for now.
