Pattern of the week: thinking of… babette blanket!

This week’s pattern is an all time favorite and a very popular one, but I thought I’d share it anyway since I am also crocheting one ๐Ÿ™‚

Ever heard of babette blankets? They’re crocheted blankets based on granny squares in different sizes and colour combinations, which create a unique pattern and a very beautiful “mosaic effect”. I love them cause they remind me of Klimt paintings ๐Ÿ™‚

As far as I know the original pattern is to be found on a magazine and you can purchase it on Ravelry for 6$, but actually if you know the basics of crocheting and you can make a granny square you don’t really need to follow a pattern in order to crochet your own babette… just let your creativity run free!

There is a group on Flickr – obviously called BABETTE BLANKET – where you can get a lot of inspiration ๐Ÿ™‚ I check it every now and then and I’m always left in awe… here are some examples

My crochet blanket is finished!

As I mentioned before, I am also SLOWLY crocheting one myself. I figured it would have been a good way to destash and make something creative with all the bits and pieces of yarn which were leftovers from other projects ๐Ÿ™‚

I need to apologize for the bad pictures, but i hope you won’t mind anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

The first step was drawing a scheme. I crocheted a 2 rows granny square, measured it and then calculated more or less the future size of my blanket. The numbers inside the squares are for the number of crocheted rows. Theย marked squares are the ones I crocheted so far.

And here it is , how it looks like ๐Ÿ™‚ The squares are joined as I go, using the same technic that I used while crocheting my Hexagons Blanket. It’s definitely faster than joining them all at the end and it allows me to always check how it is turning out. On the other end, it looks a bit uneven due to the different qualities of yarn that I am using, but i am confident that the problem will be resolved with blocking ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. HI!
Thanks for reminding me that I actually forgot to mention that in my post ๐Ÿ™‚ I am using a variety of yarns, mostly acrylic/wool blends, but there is also some wool/viscose in there. They are all supposed to be crocheted with the same size hook (4MM), but being of different qualities they tend to have different tensions, so I started using a 4.5 mm hook for the ones with a thinner thread ๐Ÿ™‚
    Hope it helps!

  2. I have seen this Babbette design used for a tank top. It’s so cute. It looks like in the picture that they used thread instead of yarn. Have you seen this? So I take it I just find different sizes of granny squares, crochet them, put them together and Wala!
