      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Charlie Hunnam is appealingly roguish as the irascible Lin Ford, but Shantaram's lack of a propelling narrative leaves this compelling character stranded.

Steve A Absolutely Love this series....Binge it Now ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Bettina B The trials and tribulations of Lin's journey to self forgiveness from self destruction through the city of Bombay and subsequent slums make's this a must see TV series. This tale of learning to be humane through serving humanity enveloped in an Indie thriller makes this a compelling, hopeful, intriguing series that has something for everyone, Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Lyssa B This show is brilliantly done. The writing, acting, cinematography, plot line, the setting (in India) and sets, character development, directing, costumes, production, everything is perfection. It shows such beautiful nuances to our humanity and motives. It feels unique in its storyline and that it takes place in India. Apple+ did its viewers dirty in canceling it after one season and leaving us with a cliffhanger. It was a truly stupid move especially since the cancellation only comes down to their own laziness and stupidity for not marketing it more. The book was wildly popular and this should've been a piece of cake to sell. Shame on Apple+. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review Thunder C I've just finished watching the final episode. Hah, what a breeze, I have to tell you. It's been a long time since I watched something that authentic and sincere in its own hilarious way. The characters are all colorful - the villains and the protagonist, and really fascinating female characters. The Bombay of the 80s - pulled that out brilliantly. The humor, the way the characters interact with each other, the camaraderie chemistry between Prabhu and Lin, the dialogues, the intensity of emotions, - it all makes sense, It's not overcomplicated, it does not pretend to be something it is not, and the plot unfolds dynamically, it literally sucks you in. No woke content, just a good old-fashioned story about human values and the consequences of choices we make - I loved it all. I do wholeheartedly recommend it. PS: such a disgrace they did not give it a second season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review Juna W Nobody should be writing a review without reading the book, one of my absolute favorite novels, which I read while I was travelling in India, the show takes its own path and doesn't necessarily follow the plot exactly but is gripping and fantastic in its own right, can't wait for season 2 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Brian Tallerico The Playlist There’s not a single weak performance. Rated: B Oct 22, 2022 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times This tale of a fallen man’s attempt to find both himself and redemption in various “exotic” lands has little self-awareness and few redeeming qualities. Rated: 2/5 Oct 17, 2022 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au It’s a languid show where not a lot happens but if you have the patience to stick with it, Shantaram is compelling enough to be an immersive story. Oct 17, 2022 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu Shantaram is definitely not the show to go for if you are looking for gritty reality, but spending time with hunky Hunnam and his colourful cast of characters does not seem such an imposition. Oct 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Watson metro.co.uk Yes, it’s a bumpy ride. But the evocation of the tumult of 1980s Bombay is vibrantly executed and Hunnam is a revelation as Lin, the anti-hero of this epic, who brings just the right mix of blokey physicality and sensitivity... Rated: 3/5 Oct 25, 2022 Full Review Rahul Desai Firstpost The narrative might go through its high and low points over the next eight episodes. But it’s safe to say that this gaze won’t be going anywhere. I won’t be holding my breath either – mostly because Shantaram is all duty-free perfume. Oct 20, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
