Biography

  • Zoé are a Mexican indie/psychedelic rock band who have won a serious amount of awards for their work. They began in Cuernavaca, Mexico, but relocated to Mexico City in 1997.

The five piece, made up of Leon Larregui (vocals, guitar), Jesús Báez (keyboards), Angel Mosqueda (bass), Sergio Acosta (guitar) and Rodrigo Guardiola (drums) are one of the most popular rock acts in Latin America today and have a well-stocked trophy cabinet to prove it. Respected Latin music organisations such as Premios Oye! and the Indie-O Music Awards have repeatedly voted them Best Rock Group, Best Band and Best Spanish Album, to name but a few. They even won two Latin Grammys in 2011, namely Best Alternative Music Album for their MTV Unplugged record ‘Música de Fondo’ and Best Rock Song for ‘Labios Rotos’.

However, it hasn't been an easy ride for the band. Despite having a recording contract with EMI quite early on, their relationship with the label was fruitless and they were forced to act as their own managers and promoters, and even to fund and release their self-titled debut album in 2000. This record caught the attention of Sony, who were so impressed that they signed Zoé and used their influence to re-launch their album to a much larger audience.

After releasing their sophomore album, 2003’s ‘Rocanlover’, Zoé found themselves at odds with Sony and grew disillusioned. They left and signed to Noiselab, a virtually unheard of Mexican indie label, and have since had a number of records certified gold in their home country. Their fourth album ‘Reptilectric’ went platinum, selling over 80,000 copies in Mexico alone.

Zoé have embarked upon lengthy tours across several continents and sold out venues such as the Mexican National Theater in Mexico City and the 10,000-capacity Mexican National Auditorium. Their 90’s-influenced space rock sound, their soul-searching lyrics sung both in Spanish and English and their consistently brilliant albums have earned them a fiercely loyal following – the buzz generated by their 2013 album ‘Prográmaton’ shows that Zoé are still capable of making music that really moves people and continues to win them new fans.

Live reviews

  • ZOÉ

Just in case you thought that The Mars Volta were the only latin-leaning psychedelic rock band ever to have existed, Zoe are here to prove you wrong; not only that, but they could potentially claim to be both more successful than Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s men - they’ve won a slew of Latin Grammys - and more enduring, too, as they’re now zeroing in on seventeen years in the business. The band have a feverish cult fanbase who continue to pack out their live shows, which are typically complex affairs; there’s long, extended versions of some of their biggest hits, a predictably impressive light show, and consistently energetic turns from the band’s frontman, Leo Larregui. Their setlists tend to span their entire career, with the epic ‘Love’ proving a popular way to close out the obligatory encores; the incendiary ‘Dead’ and ‘No Me Destruyas’ are popular staples, too. The band remain most popular in the Spanish-speaking world, but they did play a well-received set at London’s intimate Village Underground in May of this year, too.

  • Deceptioning!

Bought tickets to see Zoe in concert, traveled from Illinois to Indianapolis, only to be deceptioned because Zoe never appeared on stage. Would like to know what happened and why they promote a band that wouldn’t even come.

  • Great band! A little surprised they were the opening band for this show. ZOE is a band that can play on its own and attract a good number of fans. Would loved to see them close the show.

  • 100/100 amazing performance, and vibes. The encore had everyone super in it nobody wanted to leave after. If you haven't experienced Zoé live before I would definitely recommend you do
