Designers such as Miuccia Prada and Marc Jacobs often call upon celebrities to walk in their shows and bring a little star power to the catwalk, setting the mood for the season with each personality cast. Think Kim Jones asking Demi Moore to open his Fendi couture debut, or Tom Ford launching his namesake brand in 2010 with Beyoncé and Julianne Moore – although little photo evidence remains of the latter. Lady Gaga, Elle Fanning, and Jennifer Lopez have also swapped the red carpet for the runway on occasion.
For spring/summer 2024, Angela Bassett was joined on the Mugler catwalk by Paris Hilton, and Priscilla star Cailee Spaeny closed Miu Miu. Below, Vogue revisits these and other surprise catwalk cameos over the years.

In October 1993, a year after her star-making turn in Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone slipped on an ivory veil to play the bride in Valentino’s spring/summer show. The actor and the designer already had an established relationship, with Mr Valentino dressing Stone in a beaded gown for the 1992 Academy Awards.
