Illustration of a Homo sapiens idaltu male. This extinct subspecies of Homo sapiens (modern humans) lived in Ethiopia around 160, 000 years ago. It is known from three skulls found in 1997. The skulls have the flat face and globular braincase of modern humans, but also retain some more primitive features. H sapiens idaltu is one of the candidates for the immediate ancestor to Homo sapiens sapiens (anatomically modern humans).
